This weekend a young man of about 14 or 15 knocks on our door. He claims his sister needs a bone marrow transplant and they need money to help pay for it. No picture, hospital name nothing not even a can! My husband automatically gives the kid a 5 and sends him on his way. If I'd have answered the door I'd have told the kid to beat it. Cause I figure it's a scam and he's just buying smokes with the money. Mad What would you do?

Fire two rounds through the door to make sure that he doesn't come back again.

I'd ask for the hospital name and tell him I have no cash.

Somewhere between what Aire and PH would do.

The equivalent here in the big city is the woman standing next to a car who says she needs money for gas, that there's only enough to get the car to the nearest station. They're always accompanied by a kid or two in tow (nice life lessons you're teaching there, Ma). Once I told one, "Go in and start the car, and I'll give you a couple dollars." She started yelling and swearing, but did not try to get in 'her' car. Point made.

(Even though the next day she was there, just in front of a different car a little farther down the block.)

No way would I give them money.

I wouldn't make a big deal about it though. I'd just say no and that I don't have any.

No deal. I'm against people that are agressive with their begging. If they want to stand on the curb with a sign, fine. But don't come to my home, don't approach me. Last night I was at a coffee shop with a friend and a guy came up saying how he had just patched a leak, but now he needed money for brake fluid. We were sitting at a table outside and the guy sat down in the empty chair at the table to tell us his sob story. Friend says she has no cash, I just say no. After he leaves, friend says that's the 4th time he's come up to her at that coffee shop over the course of several weeks. Evil or Very Mad

In that same thought, Mech, my peeve is cheerleaders or teams who stand in front of stores and hold up signs begging for cash. WTH?

Sell baked goods, wash cars, walk dogs, SOMETHING, don't just expect me to hand you cash because you want to go somewhere or buy something for your team.

Y'all are a bunch of harda$$es. I'd have given a few bucks if I had it. I figure that it is between him/her and God whether or not he/she is telling the truth. Giving with a pure heart though, that's never a bad thing.

If I had cash on me (haven't carried even $1 for about a month now), I'd have given something even while I disbelieved. I always feel horrible when I drive by a homeless or even a "homeless" and don't have money to give or "can't afford" to give what is in my wallet.

That said, if the gas lady had enough money to get to the nearest gas station, it would make more sense to drive there and ask folks for a couple bucks of gas money. More likely to get the generosity. Of course, the gas lady was a fraud, but that's kind of telling...
