maybe it's that ME stuff from the 80s, but mr & I also bought into the blood sweat and tears=financial security BS as well.
he's always worked 55 hour weeks (his choice). 20 years ago, we watched the execs in his company get half million dollar bonuses every year and maybe that's when the seed was planted
enter the struggling US economy which slammed into the mfg industry 10 years ago -- it's been years since he's had a raise above 3%; no corporate 401K match for years; no bonus or what might have been considered a fraction of one; and when the wallstreet guys say "ANTE UP"--we lose a week's pay. No questions asked. it's corporate wide and it's immediate. Last year, he lost two consecutive weeks' pay to meet the numbers---between Christmas and New Years. Christmas bonus!!!!
on the plus side -- our take home pay was so much lower last year than previous one, that our federal tax return is actually very nice this year. probably poor planning, but who the heck has time to plan? we're too busy watching those yuppies from Goldman Sachs fly their private jet into Marlboro Country and yank our pay. sucksrocksbutwhatcanyado????
i just say God Bless him for his effort--something in me still wants to believe that is is not all in vain. but, we hear ya Genie.
cue the joni mitchell -- those were the days, my friend

I got the good performance appraisal, met 100% of goals plus some, work o.t. when it's req'd and I got handed a whopping 2.76% raise this year. Seems as if raises are based on how much "casual" (read that unpaid) overtime you put in. Sorry dudes, I don't do overtime unless there is a need for it. Some of these yingyangs put in a boatload of o.t. for no reason other than "to be seen". I.E., the boss thinks you're ultra dedicated because you're spending megahours in this place accomplishing what everybody else can accomplish in 8 or 8.5 hrs. Tis a crock du crappola.

Yingyang, hmmm.....
Ms. Yingyang
Madame Yingyang
Dr. Yingyang
Sigh. I'm thinking the REAL yingyangs are the ones who put in the OT, paid or not, to keep their own sanity, actually thinking it will do them some good in the end. Well, we all got it "in the end" that's fer shure!
You are SO right, rob!

Well you have the option of doing what they are bginning to implement there. They are implanting a Xanax pump/chip and monitor. Everytime you get upset about the injustice heaped upon you by the upper establishment (which here consists of white, conservative, men) the monitor detects the emotion and feeds you more Xanax. Good performance review and no raise? Budgets cuts? DOn't worry, the monitor will sense the change in blood pressure and the pump will feed you more Xanax. No need to feel anything, ever again
Pefect way to keep us all subservient wage slaves and continue the oppression/elimination of the middle class.

Dontcha love getting to be an adult and finding out that all those lessons that were forced down your throat as a child were total CRAP?
I had my yearly review right before I left for surgery. It was pretty good, or it would have been had I not been covering two jobs, working 12 hour days and weekends, not eating or sleeping for days at a time from the stress, but it was decent. Today, my first day back from leave, we get our award letters, which basically tell you what your raise, bonus and stock option awards are if you get them. Guess who, after all that, got the most pitiful raise in her worklife history, like why even bother giving me one....NO bonus and NO stock options. Nada, zip, zilch, pitooie......all that *$#&$^*#^ing work and misery for practically nothing. When I gave my boss the raised eyebrow, he told me the VP did the group that I fall under administratively himself and that the actual bosses were allowed to give input but not make the final decision, and that "the pool of $ just wasn't there for your group this year."
Excuse me? Did someone say, "oh, look at the time....5:00...what? Can I work late tonight? Ummmmm, lemme put it this way.....I'd rather clean up a steaming pile of cat puke!"
Keep your nose clean and work hard and you'll get somewhere my sweet white runner's butt. I can't wait to get out of this corporate hellhole and out into the real world. At least working to help people is worth the extra time and effort you put into it.

Its been about three years now and this is exactly why I so don't miss the corporate world only the salary sometimes .
