I get total about 3 1/2 weeks off per year. As a contract programmer all my non billable hours come out of the same bucket. Now if I do OT I can clear some time off with the boss (client) but I have to bill 80 hours every two weeks.

New job I'm asking for 3 weeks vacation to start with 4 weeks at 5 years. It sounds like they'll go for it esp since I'm going to take a bit of a cut in pay.

4 weeks paid vacation.
1 week at Christmas paid.
half a dozen holidays I think
we don't get "sick" days - i'm paid if I'm off sick but I don't get an allotted number of days.
personal days are there but are a real no-no. you are hammered in your performance review on attendance if you take personal days.

I learned to live comfortably within my salary and don't require o.t. to make ends meet like some people. I will work o.t. when necessary to keep my work caught up or if we are in a bind on a job but I'm not the guy who is in here every friggen Saturday morning no matter what.

I asked the HR guy this morning about purchasing an extra week... he said no.

I'm polishing up the resume.

I need more than 12 days a year.

I just do.

I'm willing to pay for them out of my pocket.

Probably the biggest thing though Mech, is to find a job where you wake up and it's not a dread of "going to work". Finding something you love or at least really enjoy makes it a piece of cake to get up, punch in and be productive about it.

Absolutely. Find something you love to do and you'll never work a day in your life. Until that point though, 2 weeks of vacation is nothing. And life just sucks.

hey, wait till you're 49, you'll have 6 weeks vacation and not know what to do with them

I don't think that will be the case here soon. As companies strip away benefits, the young generations aren't going to have those kind of problems. I knew a guy who talked about be stranded in his job because of the golden handcuffs. His benefits are outstanding, full pension, full Healthcare until death, 401k, 5-6 weeks vacation.

If I accrued vacation or sick leave, I'm sure I'd take more time off, but I don't accrue either. Fortunately, I can take what time I need when I want to go on vacation.

In addition to the standard holiday schedule, I usually take 2 weeks a year, plus a few long weekends. It's enough. I like my job, though, and I'm sure it makes a huge difference.

Mr Aire can't. This summer, between assignments will be the first vacation he's had in forever. We are using 30 use or lose days. After that, he still has this year's vacation time he hasn't even touched.

Mr Aire is not a workaholic--he's a homebody, but due to the climate of his position and his job, vacations are just often not an option. (I guess when you're gone for 7 months out of a year, there just isn't time for vacations)

I am a person who loves to work and will easily slip into workaholic mode if I don't catch myself. It's not for the money, really, it's because I get such a thrill using my mind and my skills and solving problems. (that don't involve why the toilet is stopped up. ) Mad Confused Mr. Green

If I were a single mom, I know that the vacation time/money issues would impact me differently.

If I were single, I don't think the vacation time would impact me at all one way or the other. As a workaholic I love to be at work.

I think part of the issue is: you need to enjoy working, because you won't always love your job.

he used to sell it back to the company, i believe they stopped that.

now, he basically takes alot of fridays off plus he will actually take 2 weeks n a row in the summer, and a week at Christmas, something he has never ever done before he got a laptop and/or blackberry.

Maybe it's just the rural setting I'm in or the difference in culture here, but I see very, very few "tolls" on families because of jobs. I'd tend to think the urban pace/lifestyle is predominately where you'll find the pressure/necessity/demand to work longer/earn more.

Honestly, I've seen it in a few families I used to work with, almost all of whom had hour+ commute in each direction that I thought took more valuable time from their families than their jobs did. And thats definitely urban related. But I don't know.

I do know I'll enjoy working 3 days a week when I graduate. And while I agree you have to have a job you don't dread doing when you wake up in the morning, you also have to have a good balance in life, stuff outside of work, family, interests, hobbies. Work can't and shouldn't be everything.

26 days a year of annual. An excess of this can be built up, but at the end of each year you can only carry over 26 days. Anything you have left when you retire is paid in a lump-sum.

13 days of sick leave a year. You can accumulate this until the cows come home. When you retire, it is added onto your period of service to figure your retirement benefit. I have over a year of sick accumulated, and have used one day in the past thirteen years.

I essentially have 16 days PTO. No doctor notes, not excuses, no explanations. I just need this day off as PTO. Love it.

I used to get 34 days off a year. That was great. But meeting the needs/schedules/sickness of little kids ensured that at the end of the year I never had even one day to roll over.

Now I have off when my school tells me I have off. And I'm too poor to go on vacation, although I again rented the shore shack for a week.

Sigh..

See, this is what I want. I want a set number of days not broken out between sick/pto (honestly, a week's vacation is 5 days pto in a row).

And I want to roll over more than 40 hours or be paid out the PTO I don't use at the end of the year.

And i want some cookies.
