Posted: 12/31/04 - 16:32 Post subject: Wisdom Teeth Extractions
I have my wisdom teeth extraction appointment confirmed on Feb 17th. Apparently I have to get all 4 taken out (the bottom 2 are growing at an angle towards the molars and so the top 2 have to be taken out as well) and will be sedated with anesthetic for 35-40 mins during the whole operation (seriously it only takes that long). After that I have to live on soft foods and painkillers for 2-3 days after the extraction and will be in bed for most of the day. I should be recovered in 2-3 days.
To the survivors of this ordeal, how long did it take you to get back into regular training again since it looks like I will miss at least 2 days,if not 3, of training, which may include my long run..too bad the appointment's in a buildup week, not a recovery week..did you do any running during those recovery days or did you just took the entire period off?

we've just been thru 4 wisdom teeth extractions and i believe everybody is different with their recovery. my son was up and around in 48 hours but i'm not saying he did anything physical at all -- in fact the surgeon encouraged walking only and really encouraged him to hit the PS2 with his face packed in ice; no activity helped his healing alot.
my son had a yucky reaction to the anethesia though. (a small percentage will)
i would not even plan any runs that week tim, if possible. allow proper time to heal, really, and you probably will never look back.
i would strongly encourage you to use the ice packs constantly too. he packed them alongside his jaw, wearing a hooded sweatshirt. it worked wonders!!

Before I began running, I had to get three of the four wisdoms pulled. I was back to usual activities (save the diet) the next day.
It sounds like the dentist/OS is being conservative. As long as none of the teeth are infected (etc), your recovery will be faster than they're telling you. Hope it goes smoothly and as little pain as possible - as in none.

Omg, the stories. I had mine cut out and had absolutely no trouble, business as usual the next day. But then I'm a tough girl. I hope all goes well for you.

I went through all 4 at once and actually by the next day I was out mowing the lawn. I was NOT running at the time though. I believe that in 2 or 3 days you will be running again but just make sure you keep your caloric intake up!

Just don't bend over--whatever you do!!
Actually, I'd listen to your doc because he's the one who knows how difficult the extraction was/might be and all the associated parameters.
You'll never regret being conservative. You rely too much on your health (i.e. school/workouts) to be casual with it.
Good luck and get better soon!!!!

You're lucky you're getting knocked out. I had 2 taken out and had a horrible time with it. I didn't run for about a week. Mostly because my face swelled up and I couldn't eat anything. About 6 months later I had the other 2 done and I kept ice on it constantly using the method above.
I was able to run 3 days later. Good luck!

Keep the ice packs handy Tim. I had to have all four of my wisdom teeth extracted and the best way through it was to have ice on my face for a great deal of time. It helped with the swelling and pain.
I was 15 at the time, but it did put me out for about 3 days. I felt lucky and didn't experience the horrors that others seem to do. I just had to rest, ice, take meds for pain and wait until I felt up to things again. I wouldn't plan on any running or training for a few days.
Good luck.

I had all four taken out years ago. I was not a runner then, but I recall recovery being a slow process (more than a week); I was in no condition to do much of anything during that time.
Take it easy and good luck!

I had all four out at once, and they put me out.
My advice is to listen to everything the doctor says to do. Dry socket sucks rocks.
