Posted: 10/14/04 - 09:07 Post subject: Windows update froze my computer! Help.....
Last night when I was turning off the laptop, the screen said that a windows update was being installed and not to turn off the computer, that it would do that automatically when it finished.....well, when I got up this morning, that was still on the screen.....how long does a windows update take? All night long?.....am I doomed? What next?

Turn the computer off, then turn it back on. That should work just fine.

But the computer told me not to....will I get in trouble?....you know, like tearing off a mattress label?
Anyway.....how do you turn off a laptop? I've tried the power button by itself and then the ctrl alt power and so on...can't get it to turn off...I could unplug it and let the battery die down, but is that a good thing to do?

You have now moved beyond what I know. Turning it off and back on is just what I would try...maybe a control alt delete reboot? Best wait for the real computer people to show up and weigh in.

You may have to hold the power button until it turns off.

Typically 7 seconds.*
At least that's the way it works for a PC with an ATX power supply.

I've had to resort to pulling out the battery a couple of times on my work laptop to get it to power down.
