Good idea or bad?
I don't feel sorry for the oil companies.
But I also don't believe that the government should retroactively punish any capitalist enterprise for succeeding too well.
Leave it alone, I say.

It didn't work all that well in the 70s and 80s.
However, I think we need to make very, very sure the petrochemical industry stays off of corporate welfare.

I agree with no corporate welfare. I also believe it is a pretty big stick we could swing, especially at farm subsidies as well.
Windfalls happen but the timing is just bad. They should not be punished.

If the politicians were truly worried about reducing the price of gasoline, maybe they should look at their own waistline first - reduce/eliminate state and/or federal gasoline taxes.
The chances of that happening are the same as me winning the Big Game Lottery (~$275 million) friday night.
