Well I am back and here is a quick summary of my 10K last week!.
Since it is the summer time and I had never run the course I was just kind of hoping to keep a solid pace through out the race. This was a fun race to do and it was nice doing a different course than the normal races here in Jacksonville FLA.
We got into town on Friday afternoon at 1 so I stopped by the store to pick up my packet since it was on our way to the condo. Well I got in there and the guy tells me the packets haven't beeen delivered yet and aren't due until 2:45 at the earliest. We hit the grocery store next door to do food shopping for the week but that still didn't kill enough time so we drove the half an hour to the condo unloaded and then I jumped back in the van (after a beer) and drove to the store to pick up my packet. I was a little dissapointed when I picked up my packet and for 25 bucks all I got was a t-shirt. Not even a coupon from a local store!!!!!
Saturday Morning.
It was a hot and humid race. I left the condo on the beach at 6 am and it felt okay. By 6:30 I was on the river and by 7 I could feel the humidity rising. I picked up my chip and hung out until the race start. The shout of go (HUH, no gun or cannon for this big of a race??) and the mass of people head down the street. The first mile is down a narrow cobblestone road and I am moving a little to fast for what I wanted. The volunteers who are telling the 5K'ers to Turn left and the 10K'ers to turn right are great. We head for mile 2 across the Memorial bridge. Traffic was still running on the bridge but I guess the police presence kept them from getting to close to us.
Headed down off the bridge to run past the USS North Carolina. The local Fire Company had a pumper truck going and was spraying all the runners. Thank Goodness since it was hot, humid and I was starting to struggle. After hitting the turn around spot and passing mile 3 I know I am going to be struggling for the second half. I run under the hose again know that it would soak my shoes but my body needed it. I was driking one water and pouring the second over my head. We head back out on the highway and across the 2nd bridge. Traffic is still being nice and staying away from us as we run on the open roads. The 2nd bridge is pretty flat with a little view of downtown Wilmington. I am now really starting to hurt. I pass through mile 4 and we approach the third bridge. This bridge is under construction so there is one lane open in each direction and no break down lane to run in. Yikes!! I had the honor of running next to a diesel truck across most of the bridge. All I can think of now is where is the end of the bridge and the end of the run.
Finally I pass mile marker 5. (I can't remember if it was before the bridge or after the bridge). I do know that as I worked my way off the bridge I was almost ready to give up. It was probably 80 or 85 degrees with humidity near 50% (just guessing at the humidity). As I make the final turn for the final stretch 2 guys that had either run the 5K or the 10K but were doing a warm down turned around as I caught them going the other way and I got to listen to them chat as I lumbered my way across the line. I think I caught 1 or 2 people and no one caught me so that was a plus.
I ticked off the lady that was collecting race numbers since my tear away tag was folded into my number. This was the first race I have run, that used a chip that they collected the number. Oh well. I walked under a sprinkler to cool off and then got my water, gatorade, watermelon and musk melon.
My time was okay and I mentally felt okay in the race until mile 5 so I think my fitness is coming back!!!
I hung around a bit after the race to see if they had any give-aways but I guess not.
Here are my splits and my results
Mile 1: 7:39
Mile 2: 7:51
Mile 3: 8:11
Mile 4: 8:53
Mile 5: 8:50
Mile 6.2: 10:44
Chip Time: 52:17
Place 20 out of 33 in the Mens 35 - 39 age group.
The complete results are here:

One cool thing was that on Sunday morning as I was reading the sports page they had a 1 page spread of photos of pictures from the race the day before and there was a picture of me in the paper!!! I can't find it online so I can't send you a link to it. If I can either get an electronic copy of it or scan it from the newspaper (which might not work very well) I will add it!

The local Fire Company had a pumper truck going and was spraying all the runners. That's awesome! Nice report and great job...that heat and humidity...tough race.
