Well I found a 10K to run on Saturday and I ran it. Probably not the smartest thing to do considering my back is still sore. I arrived an hour early and paid my fee. Then it was hang out until the start time. They had the kid's fun run first and the little girl that won that ran about a 6:30. They finally got all the kids in and the 5K and 10K went off together.
The course was a simple out and back to no real issues with getting lost. Mile markers were not available. They had water at the 5K turn around so I took some there but I forgot to hit my split. I found a mile marker for mile 3 so I got a split there. By know I knew I had gone out to fast and that the warm humid weather was catching up with me.
I hit the 10K turnaround and took another split. I was doing okay so far, but I knew I had to run 5K back to the start. All I could do was try and hang on. As I returned I offered encouragement to other runners still heading out, which is not something I normally do. I passed a mile marker for mile 4 but since I was working off of the 3.1 split, I didn't bother looking at my time. I guess my mind had said, just treat it like a training run now. A couple of people catch me and one lady that ended up being the 3rd lady overall caught me with less than 1.5 to go. I hit the 5K turn around and grabbed more water and actually remembered to take my split.
By now I am pretty well just one big pile of sweat and praying for the end of the race. (Maybe I should actually take a week off from running to let my back heal). My feet are pounding the pavement and I am just following the road.
With about a mile to go anohter guy catches me and geta about 10 yards in front of me. I just try and keep him within sprinting distaance. As we work back to the finish I wonder where it is. Finally I hear a lady at the finish line shouting to the couple of runners in front of us. I begin my kick and I catch the guy that had just passed me. He tries to pick it up and go with me but I was able to hold him off.
After taking a minute to make sure I wasn't going to hurl, I removed my chip, which I broke one little piece off of of as I tied it to my shoe. Then I grabbed some powerade and some bananas. Then it was time to wait, and wait and wait.
Finally almost an hour after I finished and about 30 - 40 minutes after everyone is in they start announcing the winners. They started with the 5K overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd for men and somehow they screwed it up. I guess the race numbers were not entered correctly?? They finally got that corrected after about 10 minutes. Then they did the ladies 5K overall and messed those up. Another delay to fix that. As I am sitting and waiting I am grabbing the little bottles of powerade and walking to my truck, throwing them in and walking back.
Finally the try and announce the mens 10K overall and it seems they got that one screwed up also. As I walk by the scorer table and the guy at the computer, they were scrambling looking through the entry forms for race numbers. Somehow some of them were not entered in the computer or they got lost. Finally after another 15 or 20 minutes they finally tried to announce the 10K overall finisher for men and they apparently screwed that up also. By now I am ticked off.
I basically said screw it, grabbed yet more powerade and walked to my truck.
So to summarize I ran a 10K that was almost 2 minutes slower than my PR and I have no idea how I did placing in the race.

Mile 4 Split: 7.57
Mile 4.7 split: 5.29
