Perhaps you're bothered because you see that people can build from very sedentary lives??? You don't just have to stroll once you get into a regular fitness routine/pattern...eventually?
I personally like the message behind this article. I know there are overweight people who get intimidated with exercise and fitness due to what they see as the norm. Perhaps if they see the "baby steps" involved they could set out a few more steps to better health. So, strolling is what it is. Strolling. Strolling and not sitting. I see a good message in this and it'd be nice if many others could read it to better their lives.
| Quote: | | "The message we need to give people is, get out and walk," said Hill, whose group America on the Move encourages walking and small cutbacks in calories to lose weight. "Any speed is fine. Some speeds are better than others, but get out and do it." |
This quote above is what I get the most out of the article really.

but, they have to walk longer!
It doesn't make sense. It takes the same amount of energy to cover a distance no matter how fast you are going. Laws of physics still apply to everyone.
Ray Browning is a respected author, I'm a little let down by this publicity stunt.

| Quote: | | said the 6-foot-1 Imbergamo, who at 280 pounds says walking is his main form of exercise. "Hopefully walking helps me keep my weight where it is." |
Yeah...let's not set the goal too high, and actually try to lose weight or anything
| Quote: | | They found the obese people burned more calories walking at a slower pace for a longer time than walking at a faster speed. |
So...where's the surprise here, really? They don't give distances, but is this the equivalent of comparing a one mile run at 7:00 pace with running 2 miles at 9:00 pace?
No kidding...the slower runner burns more calories? BRILLIANT!

It bugs me too. Nole your POV is much more optimistic, I should be like that. You're right. At least they are encouraging people who may be intimidated from activity to move at all. But,
| Quote: | Browning says vigorous exercise can decrease the risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses, but a slow walk can help people stay active while easing the stress on their joints. Obese adults are more at risk for knee osteoarthritis, which can cause painful stiffness.
|
You know what else eases stress on joints? Weight loss. You know what can cause weight loss? vigorous exercise. And as noted above with pace and time, this shouldn't even be newsworthy. I think its a little glib is all.

Walking alone (without proper diet) will not make you thin, whether it's fast or slow. Running alone will not make you thin, whether it's fast or slow.
If you exercise, but do not burn more calories than you consume, you do not lose weight. Period.
I'm a big proponent of get off your a$$ and move. It doesn't matter how far or how fast, but how long you're out. Keep moving for 15 minutes 3 days a week and aim for 25 minutes next week. Keep up until you reach a time limit you want. The more you move, the faster you will become, i.e. going further. HOWEVER, everyone's view of "stroll" is different. I would not "stroll" on a walk. It would take friggin' forever to go 20 minutes.

I think the less intimidating it is, the more likely someone is to try it. I'm talking about people that have spent decades on the couch stuffing their faces. They're not on the couch one day and lacing 'em up the next. It doesn't take it as far, but this is the same basic premise as C25K, which helped a whole bunch of people become runners.
But I agree it should emphasize the value of getting to that next level.

Hopefully people will see that "walk longer" portion of the sentence.

"It would take friggin' forever to go 20 minutes. "
it would take exactly 20 minutes to stroll 20 minutes. LOL
i think the point is that the ppl this article is aimed at are the couch potato variety, the elderly, or the obese. not ppl like us (runners).

Exactly. I can't see much cardiac benefit if they just remain at that level. That really bothers me.

Obese is a wide range. I'm considered obese, but I'm healthier than other people my age, height and weight because of my better diet and I exercise vigorously at least 3 days a week. I do understand what you're saying. I also agree about the article's target audience.
You also know what I meant about the taking forever to go 20 minutes!

I understand that and agree it prolly is aimed toward those type people. I don't undertand not encouraging them to push them selves just a bit more as they go along. And why would they not want to push themselves?? Just a bit.

I know they're at least doing something but won't they ever want to move faster?? Shouldn't they be encouraged to do more eventually? I know there are some heavier people here who run too. Comments? |
They forgot some key parts, like uteruses falling out and such.
