There are members of this board who are gay, straight, Jewish, Christian, Black, White, Brown, Liberal, Conservative. None has any more or less say than the other due to the fact that we are all created equally. Born under different stars, with different crosses to bear, but equal nonetheless.

That being said, sometimes there are things more important than freedom of speech. Those things are friendship, love, and compassion.

If my son--whom I love more than life itself-- was the victim hurled/written insults due to his religion/race/gender/life choices, you can bet your bottom dollar I would remove him from the hurtful situation as quickly as possible. I would do no less for my friends. If I can take away--or avoid altogether--even one moment of hurt, whether it be verbal or physical, for those I love--then I will.

I believe in my heart of hearts, that is what Jrjo was attempting to do. Not censor, not stifle free speech, but instead to keep people he truly cares about from being hurt or wounded by words. That is an honorable thing to do, for instead he has borne the brunt of your anger, while at the same time keeping people he cares about from being hurt.

I also know that some of the authors of those words truly did not intend to hurt or wound.

Thank you Jrjo. And thank you PH and Shelf as well for doing such a thankless job so well.

I think his whole point was not that rude/crude comments should be tolerated, but just that they shouldn't be censored.

So you're saying the decision should be to tolerate or not tolerate?

And jrjo has a right to say what he feels. That's the beauty of it all, don't you see?

Jrjo, I don’t know what you deleted, and since I don’t, I’m not trying to say you wrong in what you did. I’m just trying to expounded on a point that Jerry was trying to make.

If someone makes a comment that is nothing but an attempt at trolling, sure, delete it. But is someone makes a comment in the course of the argument, truly meaning to take part in the discussion, even if someone might find their comments offensive, I personally don’t think it should be deleted. Censoring is not the only way to show some one that their comments are not appreciated. Let the other members of the community tell them why they disagree.

As for the jacka$$ comment, I got the impression that the comments made were pretty horrible and likely were of a trolling nature. That would lead me to assume the person was a bit of a jacka$$. If that is not the case, then my apologies. But then again, if that is not the case and the person is a valued member of this board who was just trying to express his/her opinion, I don’t understand why you would have deleted them.

I apologize for starting this whole mess last week. I appreciate RF.com as I first discovered this community last Fall, moving over from the vastly more popular Cool Running forums. As someone who maintains another very popular message board on an alternate web site, I would add one thing -- You don't have any first amendment rights here on RF.com. We are all merely guests in Purple Hayes' house. While I don't believe generally in censorship -- It's his house, his rules. End of story.

It is my sincere hope that we can and will discuss current events and politics in a civil, non-threatening manner this election year no matter what side of the aisle you sit on.
