No it's not common decency. Now go kick some indecent ass with your own opinion.

Sometimes broad free speech will upset and annoy us. Our feelings may get hurt. Our views may get broadened. The knowledge that we have a lot of work to do if we want to make things better (however you view that) might be more apparent. Still, none of this justifies removal, in my opinion.

sometimes broad free speech will cause a member of a small minority to feel so worthless that they will want to check out of society totally.

Good point. But sometimes it makes them feel so angry they become empowered and they change the world.

DUDE! I can say for certain it's not the fart that's making me ill, but your avatar.

It has to go. Truly it does. What was wrong with the other ones? I actually kinda liked the nose ring one.

or they become so bewildered from the personal attacks coupled with society's general opinion, even with our own Prez concerned about what goes on in the bedrooms of consenting adults, that they feel the battle is already lost, and not worth fighting.

The only people I worry about leaving this site are people that actually run and can provide useful training/running/racing advice.

I don't think that moderators editing or removing posts scares them off nearly as much as threads like this.

A no holds barred discussion complete with bigotry and sexually explict statements would be a great thing for Political Forum. But not a Running Forum or a Quilting Forum.

I think it is great that CR and RF and other places have created off topic areas to discuss things other than running. But all of those sites have the right to remove anything that they choose. Try to understand the differences among .com, .org, and .edu.

Now if a moderator started to delete/modify running advice, that would be different. But to remove racial slurs, links to pornography, etc is quite valid. And I appreciate sites that do that.

Both are good points but I still don't see the need to PURPOSELY hurt people to make them take action. If your feelings get hurt in the process of an argument, that's different. But to say things that you KNOW when they come out of your mouth will do nothing BUT cause hurt is and always will be, IMHO...WRONG. That's like justifying a father beating his son to "toughen him up and teach him not to take any sh*t from anyone." Is that acceptable behavior? Not in my world it isn't.

The scorpions are pointing at the ants, Chuck. I apply pressure to my shoes while playing the banjo and picking an apple from the catfish. I wish the temperature would moderate. I don't think I can delete it from my mind (or message board). I wish one of my posts would get deleted. Maybe I should grow a mustache and name it moderator. The sun rises over the wet ducks who walk backwards on Tuesday.

OK, does anyone else have any final thoughts on this or can we put it to bed finally? I'm stating that I agree to disagree with those here who do not share my viewpoints on the censorship issue and I really have nothing more to add. Anyone else care to make a closing statement?

Nor does someone need to leave because of a few bad dictatorial apples.

Is that a slam against the moderators?

No. I do not attack people publicly, for that's against the forum rules. If I have a problem with someone, I PM them. After all, it's a community here.

Really? I think anybody that's been here over a week can figure out who that one person that post was directed to.

I, for one, am glad that I missed whatever post got deleted. I'm sure my opinion will be different than others who I consider friends on here, but I imagine, they'll still like me anyway. I have no problem with moderators removing posts that are inflamatory, bigoted, or anything else they consider inappropriate for this forum. It doesn't belong to me, I'm just glad I'm allowed to hang out here.

Free speech is tricky enough in the real world. Your right to it stops where it can harm others. That gets even murkier online, and I would hate to be the one having to decide what stays and what goes. Better to err on the side of caution since we don't who is reading these posts, and what damage we could be doing to someones self esteem.

I thought Runner X said it brilliantly.

Wow. Look what mega started. Bad, bad boy.

I can't speak for him, but I'm going to anyway. Smile, but I think his whole point was not that rude/crude comments should be tolerated, but just that they shouldn't be censored.

If a member of this community related gay marriage to NAMBLA, let the other members of the community tell him his is wrong. Now that the comment(s) have been deleted, the perpetrator is (inadvertently) protected. Personally, I sitting here wondering who was enough of a jacka$$ to make such a comment. As for the idea that is going to scare away any gays or lesbians from further participation in this forum, I disagree. Any homosexual that is out has undoubtedly heard worse, and is likely very well able to defend themselves.

This board does have a conservative bent, and some people here (not necessarily the moderators) do have a history of shutting down opinions that differ from the majority. Maybe it's gotten better lately, I haven't been around much, so I don't know. But the history here can certainly explain why people would be more sensitive to issues of censorship.

I know who did it. I pm'd jrjo about it. I know who the person is.
I disagree about any gays or lesbians being scared away. It is not always safe to be out to everyone, and the 3 or 4 gay threads have all been extremely homophobic. Being called a pedophile is prolly as bad as it gets, so I'm not sure that openly out gays have heard worse.
