I once asked that question when I worked at Best Buy. Can't remember the answer, though.

Don't know, probably so that there is just one set day for the new releases and it doesn't compete with the theatre releases on fridays.
I'm just making this up, but it sounds good.

I think that is part of it. But the Tuesday releases help drive midweek CD/DVD sales at retail outlets (when sales are typically much slower then the weekends).

What's the matter?

But not all movies are released on Friday, correct? Depending on the holiday, they're released throughout the week. AFIAK - videos are always released on Tuesday.

we got the Passion already. Abby's nurse was at the store at 0800 to get it. She wanted it too.

True. With the exception of extended holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Thanksgiving, and Christmas), most movies are fridays. But like Sonny said about boosting the mid week sales for DVDs, the mid week opening for a new movie is an EVENT. Coinciding with a holiday where more people have the day off, and a big EVENT movie, you may get a mid week opener. But, it is usually only those biiiiig movies that get the midweek opener to rake in the big bucks, and any movie unfortunate enough to open the same week is released on that friday even though one movie opens on wednesday.

I think all movies open on a Thursday or Friday, with the exception of a holiday opener. And DVDs and CDs are always released on Tuesdays. But I don't know why.

The industry standard for new movie releases is Friday, and DVD/video on Tuesday. Occasionally there will be an early release for bigger events (example: the Harry Potter franchise has done both - early movie and DVD releases - early), but not too often. The justification: what sonnylax said. So that one medium doesn't compete outright with the other, and to ensure a frequent stream of cash all week long into the Hollywood coffers. Box office and rental $ tallied on Sundays, DVD/VHS sales on Saturdays. Everything on a different day, to keep the numbers separate, as the divisions that support each effort are separate.

well, what ever the reason, it's a dumb one!.....when the kids were little, we used to read the Sunday ads before church, then stop at Target on the way home....if the new DVDs were available then, we would put more in the cart.....driving back to Target or Best Buy on Tuesday after school and work just wasn't a priority....so by the next week we probably would forget about it....If the ads come out in the Sunday paper, you think they'd sell more if they were available that day....

That's a big reason. But mostly because shipping/receiving departments at most major distributors run a standard M-F schedule. They spend Monday prepping for a Tuesday release.
