Kona because you earned your slot in the M40-44 AG or Kona because of the lottery?

...I saw that thread.
Okay, for sake of argument.. you earned the slot in the AG.
And for the WS100, you'd have to 'earn' the slot too because of pre-qualification races, so neither is a cake-walk entry.

how many people finish an iron man lenght triathlon in a year vs how many people finish a 100

For me, the greater challenge would be Kona.

Kona.
You have to be good enough to qualify (forgetting lottery), and then be good enough on three sports in nastier conditions.
WTR: More people attempt an Ironman in a year compared to a 100, so I wouldn't count finishing numbers. Percentage is interesting. Do you have those numbers?

Most 100's have a finish rate of 50 - 70%

nope in a ultra DNF = did nothing fatal
in an event 24 to maybe 30 or 36 hours long there is just so much that can go wrong
Plus most of iron man is on a bike - how hard can that be?

Sure, but you have to swim a couple of miles first and then go run a marathon after 6-7 hours of bike.
