I've been on a training program that had me doing trackwork. I've been running 400's. It's helped me out alot, but I was wondering when or even if, I should switch to 800's?

Out of personal preference, I would. 400s are just too short and put me too close to the puke zone.
You're just training for shorter races right?

I just finished a 8 week training program for the 5k. Now I'm starting a 12 training program for a half marathon. It also calls for 400's.

Do both. I do step downs starting at 1200's than 800's than 400's with slow (jogging or walking) 400's between them.
You can also do ladders up and down. If they don't make you stronger, they will probably kill you.

Good answer, Monk. And you're right about them killing you.

Achey,
What I do is a lot of alternating.
Sometimes I do ladders like Monk suggests.
Some weeks I do 400's
Some weeks I do 800's
And I like to alternate them... 400's will help your speed a little more than 800's, 800's will help raise your LT a little more than 400's.
Either way you look at it, they are both killers.

I don't do enough speedwork so I can't help you much but I think if you mix it up that would probably be the best thing for you.

I like 800, I think 400's are too short unless training for a specific shorter distance race i.e. 5 k
I think your really cant get cranking unless you do at least 800
I also love the ladders...
