PH, I started thinking about it in college (as that was my major) and doing something about it once I was actually employed for more than minimum wage.

25%? That's amazing!

Amazing: my old company contributed (as in, I did nothing, they just put in additional money, not withdrawn from my paycheck, their money) 25% of my annual salary to the pension and profit sharing. I left before I was vested but I took 80%.

all together now: why tf did you leave cheryl?

With each 25% they gave, they took about 30% of my sanity. I think I left with whats left of my sanity and a nice nest egg to continue growing. Despite making very few dollars at that job, 25% of very few is still something. I'm sure I'll never see that situation again.

I had a nice 401k that was matched dollar for dollar by my employer, up to 8%...

I had a choice...keep the 401k or the house...the ex got one or the other...

I still have the house....and I am starting the 401k over. Neutral

401(k)s here.

DH seriously started about 3-4 years ago at 10% a year (plus whatever match). Until that point, we'd been dirt poor since we before we got married.

If I get hired at my new job, I'll start again at 10% year.

401k when I was right out of college. The company match has varied over the years. But I've been doing the max allowed contribution thing since I was 21.

When I turn 65, I'm going to pull it all out and invest half in plastics and convert the rest into durable goods such as raw sugar and dairy products.

Plan? What the...?!?

Retirement? Is that when you quit your day and/or night job after working a specific number of years and having reached a certain age? Then money is deposited into your bank account every month until you die?

We'll be alright. Hubster opened an IRA for me when I quit my job to stay home with the kiddies. We then rolled over my 401k to it (I started 3 yrs before), which my former employer matched at 15% or so, I can't remember now. With his military pension and the combined IRA's, we'll manage.

Can you magine if our SocSec contributions had been invested the same way we've invested our retirement accts from day 1 (we both held jobs at age 17)? It's hard to believe we've put so much $$ into it, and yet we can only count on it to feed our 2 dogs when we start drawing from it.

My IRA is less than when I quit working 10 years again. DH laughs when he goes over financials....."My accounts look good, the boys are doing great, Sue you're losing more money". It'll be zero soon. I'm not accusing hubby, but.........

eh, I've got 15 years invested in the husband....I'm good Wink

Well, with my first degree I actually majored in other people's retirement, or at least how they are paying for it. This second degree is how those people are going to get their adult diapers changed when they are spending their retirement savings.
