I am in a quandry! I have been running nearly 9 months and love it. I have become addicted. However, I have had arthritis in my knees and hips since high school. It hasn't been much of a problem as I was inactive. Now that I am running, I am in pain. I took a sample of Celebrex and that seems to help alot. However, I am not sure I want to take a drug for the rest of my life. So, what would you do? Would you take the drug and run, or quit running?

Hey Faith,
I can relate! I just recently came off celebrex myself - I call it a wonder drug. I would have never been able to run without it. I've been taking glucosamine for about a year now, and it seems to really help. If you haven't tried it, I'd recommend it. It takes about 6 weeks to get full strength, but it does work.
(Keep running!)

I can relate too! I would add days of swimming. That helps add strength while being a non-impact sport. Plus, if you have access to a pool there might be a hot tub, and that always feels good.
I wish you luck. Enjoy running. Please talk to a Sports Doctor. They might have some excellent advice that will keep you running longer.

i'd probably start celebrex for a limited time - maybe 6 months - at the same time start glucosamine. see how you feel in 6 months after stopping the celebrex.
i'd also talk to a sports med doctor. try to keep active.
hope it works out for you Faith.

How old are you? My husband was taking Celebrex for awhile but his doctor said because he was young (31) that he didn't recommend taking it long term.

I've been taking glucosamine/chondrotin for 5yrs+ and swear by it. Having a problematic hip all my life, I'm not doing any favors with distance running, but it's a decision I've made to run on it 'til I can't any more. And the g/c keeps any aches quite tolerable.

As an asthmatic I take 3 different inhaler drugs every day and will have to continue that for the rest of my life. Of course I would have to do this even if I wasn't running, but it sure does help the running. So, yes, I would.
Of course, I would follow the other's advice here and chat with a doctor. Specifically a doctor who treats athletic people. Don't want to have to hear the 'just stop running' mantra.

can always do some water running or inline skating to keep the cardio up without as much trauma to the knee. I have had arthritis in one knee for 13 years now. was on drugs and all that stuff then, starting weight training the legs and inline skating with glucosamine and i do a lot better now. a bad day now and then but not many
