Posted: 10/10/03 - 11:06 Post subject: What's your office/teaching style
On location in Calgary day 1 of 10
What's your style in the office/teaching enviroment?
1.Are you more a read and react person?
2.A take charge person?
3.A go with the flow person?
4.A combination of all above?
I had my review before leaving and my boss gave me high marks in my ability to teach and communicate thoughts to senior managers and staff.
(spelling don't count in writing code, hence my spelling the real world sucks sometimes)
Also my boss said I had an emergeing style that was different than a normal office enviroment.
He said I tend to teach on how to solve problems than look to point a finger and he found that rare.
Left heading to the airport feeling good but wondering if he was sending me a message to beware also.

Oh I'm 1 & 3 on the above list

I'm a 4. I constantly amaze myself at how much I've grown up since I started teaching the girls. I am tops with patience, tolerance, and empathy now.

I think 4--I can vary depending on the situation. I'm finding that teaching is going more smoothly in terms of dealing with unexpected stuff, and I'm enjoying it more, in my second year as a T.A.

I like to let my bull headed co-workers make their own mistakes, then tell them: "I told you so!"

Used to be a #4. Now I'm a #2 because I'm tired of listening to everyone else.

I'm mainly a 1-2 combo. I'm rather anal and have a tough time going with flow. I'm trying to work more on that but I am a definite Type A so it's very difficult and often frustrating. I also am a firm believer in the teach a man to fish theory and I would much rather work with someone on how to prevent a problem from happening in the future than just point a finger and yell. That really doesn't solve much in the long run and it's not developmentally effective in making better employees.

Since I don't like to work too hard I like to give subordinates all the latitude they need to do their jobs.
Developing subordinates (you can use other words but this is the easiest I could come up with this early) is the key. Developing your people to know their job and how you want it handled is the easiest way to make your life comfortable. Let people know you trust their judgement and let them do the job they were hired for and studied for.
Along with that, comes taking care of people. I will give someone the afternoon off so they can take care of a sick child. Conversely, when the time comes, I may need them to stay late. A BBQ on the lawn every once in a while won't hurt anyone. Letting people take a Friday afternoon off in the summer won't hurt any one either.
If other managers complain, stand by your ground, show your section's progress, success and the like (Nothing talks like success). Tell your boss maybe the reason you ARE so good is because you take care and respect each other... Perhaps they should make sure the other sections are doing the same.

4. But usually the one out doing the work while my cow-orkers wonder what to do next. I work best outside of groups.
