 Posted: 08/31/06 - 11:32 Post subject: What's the biggest surprise to you so far in life?
For me there are two:
1. When I graduated from high school in 1971 and as late as 1978 I assumed the graduation rates would be around 95% or by the year 2000. I'm really shocked at the high graduation rates, especially in the South.
2. I expected race relations to be much better. While I find blacks and whites speak to each other all over the country and blatant racism is rare, the amount of racism has decreased among neither group. It's just more subtle now. Publically everyone practices political correctness. But in guarded whispers and private conversations, I find as much racism today among both groups as I did growing up as a teenager.
Whites have George Allen, blacks have Cynthia McKinney.
