"Thanks, hon"
"Listen... sweetheart..."
Sweetheart, gal, honey... don't you (man or woman) dare call me that unless you are a relative. Even then you're likely to hear about it. I've been everyone's HON this freakin week at work.
I have a name. To paraphrase the elephant man, My name <slurpy noise> is <slurp again> SAHARA!!!!
Sheesh

An approach I've found effective for this situation..if I may offer it..?
Next time it happens, break out your ever so handy boombox preset to Janet Jackson's "Nasty Boys" and whip into your bestest Miss J outfit..start dancing and singing along to ...
"No, my name ain't BABY...It's Janet..Miss Jackson if you're nasty.."
(OK, but maybe the visual made you laugh?? I will do this before I leave my current job. I swear on all that is holy.)

It doesn't bother me if someone else says them without thinking, but when it is said in a condescending tone, hold me back. Nothing is ruder than that.
I personally like to save them for terms of endearment for people I, well, find endearing.

that is my friend's approach and it is hysterical!! she even does this 'three snaps in a Z formation' thing with head/neck whip. I do think it is effective though....
I agree with Cheeks, I don't mind it (in the south its kinda common...) until its in the condescending tone (which is common among Talbots types) and then I'm FUMING
I feel for ya, Sahara!
go for the Janet...

I think it's a funny approach and I WILL do it before I leave this white male conservate dominated corporate monolith of a hell...
Seriously...I had a real issue whe I started dating my current boyfriend (he's a bit older) and his friend's wives/girlfriends (who were also older) and his female friends were really catty, with this whole pat on the head...oh, you're so lovely honey crap that I wanted to turn my head around ala Linda Blair and blow pea soup in their faces. I know he said something as it stopped abruptly except for one biatch who I finally got nasty with and after the 96th time of "Honey, you're so sweet" crap I looked at her and said..sorry, HONEY..you are not. I don't know if you can get away with that but it's a thought.
