I read about a super-climber in the US that runs ultra-marathons for conditioning and to develop "super-toughness." I think running a marathon sounds tough, what the heck is an "ultra" marathon?

Anything longer than a marathon. 50k, 50 milers, 100k, etc.

There are also ultras based on distance in a set time like 6hrs, 12hrs, 24hrs, and longer times.

Not as bad as you might think. More about mental strength than pure physical effort. Try one, they're damn good fun, and very rewarding. Marathons are only short races.
