Posted: 10/03/05 - 15:11 Post subject: What motivates you during a race?
We've all heard family, friends, bystanders, and race volunteers shout words of encouragement as we pass them by during a race. But have you ever wondered whether certain supportive messages you heard were more motivating to you than others?
I'm part of a group doing a survey to learn whether runners with specific personality traits prefer certain types of support or encouragement during a race. If you could find a few minutes to fill out the on-line survey linked below, it would be greatly appreciated and I think you will also find it interesting.
On-line runner's survey
Thanks for your help!

While cheering on runners in Saturday's marathon, usually saying "good job" etc etc, the woman next to me starting yelling "only five more miles"...she only said it a few t imes. I was afraid I was going to have to tell her "..I really would not want to hear that at mile 21."
Second least favorite is "you're almost there."

I thought about putting that on Rob's sign, but then I figured he would kill me.

Hell I'd of never finished the race if I saw that! | Memo to self: When in a race with Rob, post these signs. This would give me a fighting chance...

Seems like it. I thought making conversation would attract a newbie. Alas no.

I find pushing down gray-haired people in the finish chute to be motivating.

Speaking as one of the "gray haired" demographic: I got yer "pushing down" right here !! Try it with me bald boy !!
Of course you realize after spending some time at my old school in NJ I have rejuvenated my "Jersey Jive Talk" capabilities...

I was talking about the gray-haired runners that finished in front of me.
