Does that really mean its sucessful just because it lasted? My grandparents were married for 40 something years. After my Grandma died I learned that they pretty much hated each other's guts for most of those years.

Two people who have already found peace and happiness in being themselves, who love spending time with each other and have a mutual desire to share their happiness with each other.
It is also important for each person to respect the covenant of marriage and to be equally willing to make the sacrifices that agreeing to that covenant entails.
Funny, anything I think to say sounds too simplistic...

Plus I would also add:
Two people who realize that love isn't all there is to a marriage and that some days you have to wake up and just realize you are going to be committed to the marriage even if you don't feel like it. Committment is key!
