the generation behind you........and the generation behind them?????

Based on the way you you were taught and brought up what's the one thing you can say you noticed in general in your opinion is lacking the the generation behind you or the generation behind them?

This was a lunch time conversation brought with a good friend from work as we always do lunch on wednesday and spend that hour just finding topics of interest.

Anyway Sarah brought this up and it got me thinking and I replied the lack of respect people have that are 15 to 20 yrs my junior was the main thing I saw.

No one it seems cares about the crosswalk and stop and let people walk from one side to the other.....now its a matter of waiting for all the traffic to clear, while folks are on their cell phones.

The other is just simple manners I've notice how rude younger people are nowaday and how their attention span is pretty much lacking.

Not sure if we can attribute all this to the instant 24 need it now technology we now have access to or the fack that more folks have less time on thieir hand for various reasons.

Any thoughts????

Things that kids these days don't have?

This sounds like the ultimate bickering old codger topic. I guess I would say cool Super Heroes.

When I was really young, I used to watch Thundercats and He Man. They kicked serious ass. My little cousin watches Spongebob and a couple really crappy Japanese cartoons.

They suck.

respect for core values, mainly respect. We deal with a lot of kids who have not one shred of respect for the law or elders.

Personal responsibility for one's own actions appears to be Gone With the Wind. Today everyone wants to blame their troubles on everyone and everything except themselves. My grandnephew claims he lost 3 books at the end of the school year. The only thing his mother is concerned about is the $110.00 she is going to have to shell out. No feelings of remorse on the part of the child - just oh well.

If a child is failing a class, it's the teacher's fault, not the study habits of the child.

When someone rear ends another car, it's not their fault. The car in front of me stopped without warning.

When criminals commit acts of violence, it's society's fault. We just need to rehabilitate them. No need to punish. Their victims just need to forgive and forget, whether dead or alive.

does she live in Radnor. That is the mentality. Shift blame and what does it cost?

Oh and how will this make me look.

As I read this, one thing is growing abundantly clear to me.

You aren't describing the next generation. You are describing TODAY'S SOCIETY. Lack of respect? No personal accountability? That is nothing new to those damned kids, it is a prevalent theme in our society.

Frivolous lawsuits are a perfect indicator of the armaggeddon. People sue because it isn't their fault they are fat from eating McDonald's. People sue because it isn't their fault they spilled hot coffee on themselves. Cops' rights seem to be further limited every day. The list can extend quite long.

While it may be becoming commonplace, it is certainly no mystery as to where kids learned these disgusting habits. We teach them every day.

Just an observation. Carry on. [/hijack]

How very true. Personal accountability is zilch in today's world.

I second that emotion. But the main question is, how and why (and when, I guess) did things shift so radically from when we were kids? I'm just shy of 40, for God's sake, so 20 years ago is really not a long time if you stop and think of it in the context of social evolution. WTH happened in such a short period of time? I'm sure there was some of this happening back then, but is it the media's fault for sensationalizing it, or society in general just going to sh*t, or.......??

This could make for a very interesting discussion today!!! Have at it, folks.....

You know I was thinking if this was me just getting old and the thought had crossed my mind of how some of us 35 to 45+ in age may feel its just a lack of respect for core values and others may think its just society as a whole thinking they are doing it and getting away with it why not me?

But my oldest nephew (who's 19) sealed the deal with me, when all he had to do was cut the yard takes all of 30 minutes..and he did it in 10 minutes.

The grass won't grow anymore and the excuse was he was running late to hang out with his friends and he knew he needed to spend atleast 20 minutes in the shower getting ready Shocked

Now my whole thinking is just getting a guage of feeling on what you see or feel on this topic.

For those that have taken the time to answer thanks.

See, you're not taking any personal responsibility. Trying to put the blame on someone else. :shakeshead:

I don't know when personal responsibility went out the window. I guess lack of concern would fit the PR term also.

Well lets look at the advances in the last 20 years.

Remember the first portable computer weigh about 20 lbs had two floppy 3.5 disk drives, green monitor and memory was measured in kilobytes.

SUV's were Trucks

The word composit materials was something only N.A.S.A was doing.

Cable was the only thing and CNN was only 4 yrs old at the time.

I could add more but this is all I can think of right now.

I think it all boils down to time and how we manage it and how we are ruled by it.

I think the lack of personal responsibility is a direct fault of our generation. (those of us who are a very young 35-45) Those of us who grew up in the 80's know it was a materialistic time, and we seem to want our kids to miss out on nothing, so we provide everything for them. They don't know what it's like to have to wait for something, not get it, or have to earn it.

I love kids today. I think they're sweet, curious, kind, and truly want some direction. They just aren't getting it. Many parents would rather be their friends than parents.

Of course, this is a wide, wide, wide generalization, and I imagine that there are just as many parents who don't just hand their children things. I think that there are just enough that do that is permeated our society and made it that much more noticeable.

Then again, think what our parents said about our generation. I'm not sure this is abnormal at all.

Television...

The average American watches 30-hours a week! Adult men is 29, women is 34 and kids average 28.

We all agree so often that the tube is filled with crap. And many of us are way below average, but that just means that many are way above average. For MILLIONS of kids, the tube is a baby-sitter, it's the single most time consuming quantity-wise thing they do.

How do parents expect to counteract an influence like that with a couple weekly outings of maybe 10-hours a week? Or give a lesson in manners when kids see disprectful characters hours and hours a week? Or how elders are treated like old fools often on tv when kids might visit their grandparents a couple times a month for a handful of hours? Where's the greater influence? Men are characterized as bumbling fools on most shows. No wonder so many young women treat them that way and young men appropriately act so.

I firmly believe the influence of the tube in the last 30 years leads the pack in how our society has become a disprectful, bad mannered, foul mouthed, finger pointing culture. The next time you surf through primetime programs, think about the millions of kids soaking up the put-downs and the violence and the lack of compassion for fellow man.

I won't for a minute believe anyone that says their above it. At some level, to some degree, a person's behavior changes. It might not be apparent today or tomorrow, but over the years and accumulative in society as a whole, I put the biggest blame on Hollywood. Kids and so many people locked in their homes at night soaking in all this "entertainment" are filling their minds with examples of how to act and what to say in situations. Isn't it apparent, even here in Riff-raff how often we "quote" a line from a movie or a tv show? It's an influence we don't care to admit, but the fiber of personalities is more and more becoming mirrors of Hollywood in more and more conversations. The days of quoting philosophers or poets or the great thinkers of this world are over. The lyrics of videos or lines from movies are a constant noise.

The culture is sliding little by little, day by day. And it's not noticeable until you look back in retrospect. When Snoop doggy dog gets quoted more often than Benjamin Franklin or Mark Twain, you know it's get your mouse off of me
