It was horrible. I can think of 2 cases. The worst being Martin. Precious boy, 3 years old when I met him, about to have his 6th birthday when I moved away. Very active, VERY smart, not rote smart but scarily intuitive. He was 'very active' (borderline to hyper active) and I think that was more than very career oriented mom could take (who seemingly had two kids for show, or on accident). But, when his foods were monitored and sleep patterns were very consistent (sad when I the caretaker know as well as the family if these are true because I'm the one doing half) he did really really well. When he wasn't though (which unfortunately was the majority of hte time) he was a handful and had plenty of incident reports which angered career oriented mom. So she would pick up poor Martin at the end of a VERY long day for him and as he is so excited to see her she would proceed to yell at him in front of his friends after we had given her incident reports to initial. We would almost treat him differently after a while just to not get the incident reports. Just heartbreaking. |
*sigh* Poor Martin.
Sometimes I lament that I wished I DID have a job to go to instead of stay home with Olivia. I love her enormously but she's not always the happiest camper and I would kill to be let out of the house (without her) for 8 hours. And I've had the ideal corporate job and this mother stuff is BY FAR more difficult.
Again, I digress. But you get the idea.

I am just as bad. Here I am typing away and Olivia is playing alone in the other room...watching Wiggles. I swear, it's not all day long. We are dressed and ready to go to the park and her little friends were over yesterday to play. And we read lots of books, play with her blocks...
But if it wreren't for an hour here or there without TV and I would have no time to myself. It isn't on all day. I swear.

Well said OL. Anyone who has met my children can vouch for them. |
I just have to add that this is a great discussion! We have some really insightful people here. |

I know the feeling! I go pick up kid no. 2 in my big honkin' 4x4, take him home and let him plop himself in his favorite chair (he's way too big for me to plop any more), give him a 6 pack in the little cooler so he doesn't have to get up, find him an ashtray for his smokes and tell him not to bother me. The phone is within reach so he can order pizza and have it delivered whenever he's ready.....

The awful truth is that two of our kidlets are all growed up and gone, and the littlest kidlet has one foot out the door. In less than a week we've gone to see Harry Potter and Shrek 2 - sans kidlets.

First off, let me say this is a great thread.
I agree with a lot of what is said here.
However, are we just getting old here?
For arguements sake?
You know, in the 20's, the world was going to hell, what with all the drinking, and the flappers, and OMG...the world was gonna end.
Then you had the depression, and then the World War II. And then...
Elvis was the devil
The Beatles were the devil
The Stones were the devil
I'm not saying anyone here is wrong, but let me say this...every generation thinks the next one is going to hell. Every generation looks at society and feels like it's falling apart.
Now I, sitting here, typing on a computer in the middle of South Dakota, with the Laker game on dish network behind me, and central air pumping through the house....I can't do it.
There's bad stuff, sure. There always is. But there are great things too.
Don't you feel that our society has progressed. C'mon women, aren't things better now than before....ever in history?
We live in the greatest nation in the history of the planet. And because we have so much, we will have many problems. Problems lead to solutions.
We are on the right track people. Don't get me wrong...I don't condone people ignoring their kids, or hardly anything mentioned here. But the fact that we see these things, and recognize them as problems, is exactly why things will always, inevitably, change...for the better? what is better?

Welcome back coach and this something to think about as you make an excellent point on how every generation thinks the next is evil.
I think my thinking was how in 1 generation (20 years) so much has changed that sof rof the folks behind us and the group behind then has forgotten the simple thing like manners, knowing how to have some really crappy jobs before you land some good job, and the level of technology has exploded to where we (they) may feel their life is incomplete if they don't have the same toy/game/phone/ their their friends have.
I think Genie hit it right on early in this post"
| Quote: | I second that emotion. But the main question is, how and why (and when, I guess) did things shift so radically from when we were kids? I'm just shy of 40, for God's sake, so 20 years ago is really not a long time if you stop and think of it in the context of social evolution. WTH happened in such a short period of time? I'm sure there was some of this happening back then, but is it the media's fault for sensationalizing it, or society in general just going to sh*t, or.......??

Yes, they are for women, no doubtabout that! Personally, I think it's great that women have a choice to work AND be a mother--that women can "have it all" like men. And I do agre with a lot of wha tyou said, and that our perspective might benefit from looking further back in time and comparing how things were one-hundred years ago, and how things are, and better appreciate how far we've come. Sure, things are not perfect, but, heck, technology sure has brought us futher along than our ancestors could have ever hoped for.
