I'd like to believe there's some afterlife, it heartens me when people speak of their near-death experience so similarly b/c it implies there is something out there, but I don't really feel it's the case.

I think probably nothing. But maybe there is something. I don’t think we have any kind of existence remotely like what we have now. Maybe our souls become part of some kind of cosmic energy, but I don’t think our souls go to a Heaven or Hell or float the Earth and haunt those left behind.
I highly recommended the book Spook as an informative and entertaining book on the subject. The author looks at the research (so to speak) of the afterlife. Everything from reincarnation to how much a soul weighs to communication with the dead. The author describes it as a book for people who want to believe there is proof of an afterlife, but they’re just not quite there.
