Posted: 04/21/03 - 13:15 Post subject: What happened while I was in Texas???
I got back from the Sovergn Nation of Texas on Friday, and I was just wondering if I missed anything important.
I have not been in Texas for 30 years (when I got out of the Army).
I re-learned terms like "Bubba" and "Y'all"
I learned how to eat crabs (lots of work for just a little meat....I've heard that somewhere before...can't remember where)
I learned what a "CoonA**" is
I learned that most people in Port Arthur live in "trailer homes"
I learned that a beat up 74 Ford pickup is respected more than a 03 BMW.
Anything North of the Mason-Dixon line is "Yankee Land"
I am now an official "Good Ol Boy" according to my supplier
Oh well...it's good to be back in "Yankee Land"...Y'all

Do I dare to ask what a 'coona**' is? If it's racial I"ll drive down there and kick the crap out its user myself.

It's not racial when the use it in our office. It's more like a term or endearment.

Well...it's good to get back to the kids (ya should have seen the house) Note to self: NEVER leave 19 and 24 year olds home alone for 9 days.
I love em...but would return them to KMart if I could
I guess I was just glad to be able to run somewhere that was not dead flat, sandy, and swampland. It was actualy nicer here on Saturday, than in Beaumont TX.

NO ... It's a term for a back woods bayou person from Louisiana/Texas border area... It's a term they call themselves proudly...if you call them one, ya better be smiling.

I'm guessing you didn't stray far from the Port Arthur area? I've only driven through, but it sounds exactly like your description! and quite different from Houston... Did you see the tribute to Janis Joplin?
On the cajun side note, the day after GWB's speech about going to war, shock and awe and such, a friend of mine told me "I only caught part of the speech but what kind of messed up Cajun name is Chokinaw?"

In Texas, it refers to a cajun. In other parts of the world...it's not so nice. Here, a great compliment.
Edited to say I'll finish reading other posts before responding!
And NO, RangerG did not meet up with me or AlaninTX...such a shame since it's such a small state...
