Bix 7 - Davenport, Iowa

Once again, me and a cast of thousands - according to the local papers, a total of 16,627 for this one, including some top name runners. This race was the coldest (61* is cold?) in its history (this was the 30th anniversary).

The Bix starts in downtown Davenport, literally going uphill - steep uphill - for the first half-mile or so. Between this, and the crowds, the first mile was a slow 10:25.26. The second mile levels out, only to have another incline in the third (though not so severe as the opener) - 8:56.42, followed by 9:46.71. During the third mile, we got to see the leaders already on the way back ( Evil or Very Mad ). A never-ending winding of the streets works its way to the half-way point. Then it's essentially back to the beginning. Remaining splits of 9:26.10, 9:40.99, 9:22.64, and (it's all downhill to the end - well, almost) 8:30.40.

Watch time 1:06:08.52, gun time 1:09.12. No official standings posted as of the time I write this, and as a result, I don't know where I finished. I wanted to get this one in at a sub-ten minute average, which given the hills and the crowds would have been very good. The two times above are under ten, and if the race director's comments at the awards ceremonies are any indicator, the gun time should be pretty close.

The race is part of a music fest, and all the sideshows that go with that. All of it quite nice. Between that, and the awards ceremony (met some people - names not familiar, like John Korir, Constantina Tomescu-Dita - hhhhhhhhhhhot, Bill Rodgers, and Joan Benoit-something-or-other Razz ), I stayed some five, six hours more than I planned. But it was a good time, got a nice finisher's medal from an attractive young lady, and I was happy with the results.

Updates:
Overall finish 5416 ( thumbs up )
AG 864 of 1327 between ( Confused and Neutral )
Official time 1:09:21.00 (under ten per mile, so thumbs up )

And yes, Deb, I did get a shirt. Smile

Damn you run some big races. I would not know what to do with more than 400 people in a race.
Pretty good times for a training race though!! Sounds like post-race was alot of fun!!

She's on the cover of this month's "NY Runner". I can't get past that huge forehead of hers. She looked even stranger close up and in person.
