Well, to be utterly practical, most of these things that are a problem don't go on forever. Most crises (not talking about illnesses) take about six weeks for some sort of resolution.

When I have stuff going on, I share it with others to help me gain some perspective, do what I can to limit the effect, and try to ride it out as gracefully as possible.

Also, I try to take pleasure wherever I can. Sometimes that means looking at a sunrise for a long minute of an otherwise frenetic morning, sometimes it means inhaling the freshly washed hair of a Goette.

Finally, I try to do nice things for myself I might otherwise skip just so I don't feel like I'm being totally f*cked over.

If whatever is going on is more long-term than a couple of days, it's great to do something nice for someone else. Bake a cake for or give old clothes to or buy new games for an emergency shelter, check in on an elderly neighbor or relative, write (don't email) a card to someone you've been out of touch with for a while.

HTH.
