For me my way of coping is to never let myself feel that the walls are closing in on me and to keep an open perspective on everthing in my life be it work, family, or life.

This has been the toughest year in my life as far as family (two people with cancer, another with losing their eyesight), and its easy to just say why me and wallow in the unfairness.

Yet this has also been an excellent year for me as far as work, and the chance to do and see some of what life has to offer.

The key for me has always been to maintain a healthy balance in all the things I can control, and not worry about the things I can't. also my desire to learn different things be it work, medicial, keeps me balance.

The flipside has been my running and not getting out there with the same passion I had a year ago. Its too easy to blame work, blame family but the ultimate blame is on me and I've finally taken steps to steer that ship in the right direction.

The best advice when things are rough are to find the things you find joy in and reconnect with those feelings.

Very timely discussion. Every time I turned around this year and thought "gee, it can't get any worse" it always did. I've been taking care of myself for so long I have a hard time when others try to take care of me. I rely too heavily on myself, and am often unable to ask for help. Luckily in addition to running I have a great support system that makes me let them help. Wonderful parents and in-laws, a great brother and SIL, at specific times another brother. My friends have been amazing this year, and I could not have gotten through this year without them. I've learned a few things this year. That I can ask for help, and receive it, and that this is not a sign of personal weakness. That sometimes the people you've relied on the most will disappoint you the most. And that the depth of what some people feel, and the lengths they'll go to to help you, quite often remain unseen until tragedy strikes. But the cream always rises to the top, and this year, recent months especially, I've been fortunate to be predominantly surrounded by the cream.

Just seeing that smile would cheer anyone up! I don't suppose you'd rent her out for a weekend? Wink

This is great advice, even if what brought you joy a year ago now doesn't hold the same feeling, but something else does. I lost my passion for running after being on the bench for almost two years due to illness and injuries, and having to start over was just sucky. But there are other things that I didn't have time for, like yoga, when I was putting all my energy into training, that I find I love just as much. Thanks for the reminder!

Well what's funny is that the first TWO I took she told me "OK I'm going to be serious and not smile." she held out for two pix.

Her father has an arsenal of topics that will crack her toughest resolve.

For me I always remember a time in my life when things were at their suckiest....my Dad was diagnosed with cancer and died three months later. I had to take care of him and watch him deteriorate until he had no strength to go on. Whenever I think that things are tough now, I remember that time and realize that, you know what?...this isn't so tough. Then I think of all of the good things that I have in my life and realize that how lucky I truely am.
