I often got comments of being crazy for getting up at 500 on a January morning with snow on the ground and sub zero temps.
Most of all, they respect the fact that I was dedicated to keeping myself fit

My friends have nicknames for me.....like "muscle woman". I got that one after carrying someone heavier than me up the stairs ( piggyback rides, we do them all the time )

Most of my friends run. And I'm lucky - my hubby runs with me too. Helps when your s/o workouts out with you! But those that don't run usually respond more with "good for you, I wish I could do that".

Most think I'm a nut but in a good way. My 19 yr old nephew has caught the running bug now and my sister is thrilled by the fact. My gf, even though a non-runner, is very supportive of me although she's concerned about some of the longer distance racing I'm hoping to do this year. My x never attended a race, never offered a supportive comment and only showed interest in my racing when I'd occasionally collect a nice prize for an age group win.

Wow. That's so true.

I've got a few friends that run, but most do not. You wouldn't know I'm a runner in any sense if you didn't know it already - I'm a bit chunky. When I tell people who don't know, they are more amazed that I actually run than me being crazy.

Hi,
I am new to this forum and found this topic and replies very interesting. I live in a very active city and most of my friends are doing some form of excersise. Most run to keep up in other sports. My husband runs ultra marathon and my parents used to run ultramarathons (just to show that some in laws do understand their son-in-laws While our running doesn't shock people, we belong to a endurance sport club with a name that raises eyebrows...Nothing kinky about Club Fat Ass, but boy, do I sometimes have to do some explaining....
Back to the topic of non-running friends...it seems they either are runner wannabees or would like to run, but have health problems that prevents them to hit the trail.
Cheers

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the welcome. I'm happily settled in North Vancouver. Great running trails, nothing flat, though ...
I do sometimes post on coolrunning. I am not a regular at any of the boards, no time.
The 50k on New Years Day is the largest Club Fat Ass event and gets quite a bit of press, because it is seen as totally insane to run 50k on New Years Day. I managed 25 k this year. The course is beautiful and it was a great way to start the year. Luckily, most of the CFA events also have shorter distances. The next one is the Capilano Canyon Night Run, 19 February. We run about 90min with headlights, part of it on trails in Capilano Canyon. Lots of fun. CFA events are hosted by members for members and the Night Run is hosted by my husband and me. Check out http://www.clubfatass.com/CABCVan_mardigrasnite/
Happy Trails,
Turtlepace (and I mean it)
