Posted: 02/20/03 - 18:06 Post subject: What a great thing just happened here at the PO PO
We had a parent come in with her 17 year old son who has down's syndrome, who dialed 911 several times yesterday. We went there to his house and he was very upset that we came when he realized what he did. His mom was extremely apologetic both yesterday and today.
She brought in a big box of goodies for our whole squad for our absolute professionalism in dealing with this call.
I told her I have a real special place for the retarded as you may figure and sat down with her and her son for a few minutes. We talked about Abby and the different struggles we both went through. I think she felt good that I really understand how she feels
Once her son realized that he was not going to get arrested, we had a great chat, and her son and I are now lifelong friends.
His whole face lit up when I gave him my business card.
The mentally retarded rock my face off.

A great story.
You reminded me of a story told by a friend of mine recently....
His brother is a fireman, who has a 3 year old son. Having had the discussion with the little boy about calling 911 "in an emergency", he failed to mention that the number was NOT a direct line to dad at the fire station.
A few days later, Mom walks in the kitchen to find the boy on the phone yelling "I really need to talk to my daddy, and I know he's there!!! Let me talk to him!!!"
Great stuff, I tell ya...
BTW rtpd, nice work with the kid today.

(Assuming, of course, that Artie is rtpd. If not, then a big fat 1/2 and who the heck is Artie?)

That is really cool! One of my closest friends has a son with Down's and he is just the most delightful person....although he does have his moments, like all kids do. We can all learn a lot from dealing with these special kids....

Good story Joe.
My youngest son dialed 911 when he was 5 just for the hell of it. This big dude of a sheriff (like 6'7" and 300 lbs big) shows up at the house. I'm outside tinkering with a truck when he pulls in and asks me if I have a problem. I tell him nope, no problems here. And he tells me he just got a 911 call from this address. I go in house, ask junior if he's been playing with the phone. He says no of course, I ask him if he's sure and he says no he wasn't messing with phone. I tell him there's somebody here to see him and walk him into living room where the dude is standing taking up the entire doorway. Junior breaks down immediately, starts apologizing, etc. Sheriff was very nice and calm and explained to him that you should only dial 911 in an emergency and my kid tells him he was just checking to see if it worked. The sheriff told him that yep it worked and a promise was made to never dial it again unless there was a true emergency. Guy was a true professional, my kid was scared straight.

You think he can visit our house for things other than 911? Like smarting off, doing a half*ssed job on hw, and all the things a teenage boy might need to be "scared straight" about? I wonder if this cop hires out.....

Well since this was 13 yrs ago I'm not sure if I can look him up again.... I don't think you can scare a teenaged boy straight on the things you've mentioned... my son was only 5 or 6 when this occurred...

I think the easiest way to scare a teenage boy is to threaten to chaperone his next school dance if he doesn't wise up!
