In my ever so humble opinion, you can't go wrong with either choice!

which would be the more humane harvesting procedure? i'm thinkin' the sperm can be harvested withouth killing the salmon, ( : ) howevah----those testes can't be taken without a total kill.
my answer would depend on which is the most friendly procedure. you know, i'm thinking of the fish here.

No, Rolling Rock, I can assure you that herring testes are harvested only from those fish who either:
1) Need them removed for medical reasons
or
2) Feel they were born the wrong gender.
It's elective surgery and far more humane than teasing the salmon.

See that pair of pliers that are 2nd from the right? That's what they use on sheep and they manage to live through it.

First, how would you know the fish felt they were born the wrong gender? Have you mastered Herring Speak???? I think not!
Second, the herring are permanently disfigured. And don't think for one minute that fellow herring aren't laughing when the disfigured one returns to school!
Third, the Salmon were not teased, as you suggest. They were manipulated to a full release. I specifically remember seeing a smile on the salmon's face. I'm sure most males would agree, this is not inhumane.

While we're on the subject, did you know that sheep are born with long tails?
FYI - The same tool works for that problem too.

I'm sensing some similarities between the two procedures. Maybe we could have a more indepth dissertation on the subject?

I would think that Salmon would swim towards the lab, while Herring would swim far away.
