One of Larry's managers needs a night out and a day off with his wife, badly, and their babysitter cancelled. So we are watching a 6 year-old terror. Seriously, this kid isn't bad, just hyper and prone to getting into things. He can't sit still for 20 seconds. I say we take him down to the beach with the dog and let him run around with her until they both collapse. Any other ideas? I haven't babysat since the 10 year old lighting his hair on fire debacle, which was back in my teens.

What does one do to amuse a 6 year old with a high activity level?

Get him involved in playing with the dog. It is amazing what they will end up doing together. Once it gets dark you might need to find a movie he will like.

physically tire him out on the beach, with the dog. i'm sure both the dog and little kid will learn to appreciate each other and the fresh air and running will wipe him out. i might do the movie thing after that. he also might like to draw or color. physical exercise outside makes him much less prone to go apesh*t in your house. have fun!

All right, he apparently comes with a DVD to watch and we are taking him to the arcade for a burger first and games. Then beach, which no one is swimming in at night now because it's windy and man of war's and jellies wash up on the rocks with the seaweed. It's OK to wade but not to swim at night. I was just going to let him run around with the dog, who is great with children, on the sand and wade under our supervision.

I't can't be that bad, I hope. It's only for for about four or five hours.

I suppose so, yes.

But wouldn't you rather that I just be your babysitter? My employment would depend on how well I do my job. Peace...harmony....tranquility...that about it?
