About to leave here to drive to a 30K race. I am not running in it, just a few of us are going to meet at about the 17 mile marker and set up our own little cheering area/water stop for a bunch of our friends that are running the race--and for everyone one else out there on such a cold morning.
I always feel a little like a non-combatant when I do this, but it sure gives you on interesting perspective when you watch.

Last year at the Gate River Run 2 little kids set up their own water station using dixie bathroom cups and even put a sprinkler running out into the road. It was a great surprise to see and I think the kids got a kick out of seeing all these people come by grab a cup and then run through the sprinkler to cool off.
Have fun and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.

It is sometimes hard to watch Alan from that perspective.

From which perspective are you watching Alan?

Watching the 30K race this morning was a bit awe-inspiring. Standing at the top of the last hill in the race at mile 17 and watching 800 people and being one of three people cheering was pretty cool. The leader and the lead pack were flowing but you could tell they were hurting. Witnessed a great battle between the two women leaders as they fought each other for the lead coming up the hill, they crested the hill together and from what I understand they raced the whole way to the finish. Then the legions of runners just trying to get this one behind them.
It was fun to watch. But I left wishing I had run in this one--I did it last year and knew I wasn't in the right kind of shape to do it, but I left wishing I had been.

Good on you Alan, for being part of the cheering section and providing refreshment.
And perhaps you have hit on the ulitmate motivator - go watch a race or two. I've never watched one. I'm willing to bet that would get me off my backside because whenever I see someone running I always wish I was out there running too.

Alan!!
Thats great you did that, I'm sure it was much appreciated!
Especially coming off my half this morning, spectators can really make the worst sections of the course so much easier by their cheers (and treats, we had LOTS o' treats! Dum-dums, nachos, LOTS of krispy kreme, oranges....) I haven't ever watched a race, but the more I do and the more I appreciate the spectators (esp the ones who stick around to cheer on slow little boring ole me!) the more I realize I should.
Side note, um, exactly how brutal is a 30K in Austin????? Esp one that ends with an uphill??
I'll stick with the flatlands of Houston, thank you.

This is a very brutal race indeed. I ran it last year and it is a mean course. They hold out in the middle of nowhere and crowd support is non-existant, hence why we decided to do something this year.

What was the temp at 7 am? About 32, but I know even that is quite balmy by most of the country's standard for this time of year.

I'll vouch for ya, Alan. It was 34 here (according to 3 local stations and my dad's new radio shack weather station contraption and well, my skin) when I was leaving at 6. Weather.com was reporting 51 degrees at the same time. I know there are descrepancies, but....
So, if its 34 here, it had to be colder there....
