Posted: 08/17/05 - 09:34 Post subject: Watching business people solve computer problems is so
funny, yet frustrating.
The system is supposed to be I do the heavy duty data stuff so they can think the Big Business Thoughts.
In practice I spend a lot of time watching them take really ugly paths to get the answer to the question they want answered. I suppose that being a mindless, mercenary contractor it shouldn't matter to me as long as my pimp gets paid my insane hourly rate and gives me my cut.
I think the trouble is the stuff I do seems so simple to me but it totally confuses them and they don't believe the answer. Where I tend to work in database / set theory they tend to think in terms of spreadsheets and cubes. I guess the upside is when they do it themselves they get lots of exposure to the data that might give them other ideas.
I was funny to watch a hot shot MBA/businnessling spend 45 minutes to answer a question that I wrote the query to do on my scratch pad in maybe 10 minutes. Tried to show him how I might have done it. He didn't believe my answer would work. It did.
Back to the salt mine.
