Posted: 08/02/03 - 10:08 Post subject: Washington Fair 5 mile race.
My goals for this race: Beat my time from last year. Beat the 60 something year old woman who edged my out last year. AKA Grandma-shuffle. I was looking to hold an 8:30 mile pace.
What I actually accomplished: None of this.
Morning is beautiful cloudy 68 degrees, perfect for me. I'm thinking I got it cause last year it was 85 and humid as all get out at race time.
First mile goes by, I've passed Grandma-shuffle and my time is 8:02. I'm feeling good. 2nd mile is uneventful, I keep waiting for Grandma to sneak up on me, and I won't look back. I won't!! Time is 8:39 for mile 2. This is where the major hills start. Ugg. I see mile 3 marker, I hit my watch to mark it, I look at my watch 21: something! That isn't right!! Wait... Oh crap it's not mile 3 until I run up that big hill and turn around and come back. Now the wind has been taken out of my sails and my splits have been totally screwed, so I stop and walk a bit up the hill. Here is where my motivation completely leaves me. I don't know what my time was for mile 3 but I think the overall time was 26: something. I'm thinking ok that is still less than 9 minute miles (barely) I kick it in which was easy cause it was downhill, and when I got to the bottom, I walked again. Here's where I'm thinking Holy crap I suck! WTF? Mile 4 comes along and there goes Grandma Shuffle, Shuffling by me. So I jog along side her for about a quarter mile or so, then I stop and let her go. Disgusted with myself I walk most of the last mile. My final time was 47:33. A whole minute and 15 seconds slower than last year.
Excuse me whilst I go pout.

You need to use the Shelflifer's Kidney PunchTM on her next year. A little scuffle with the 'Shuffle' and you'll hustle across the finish line before her.

Sorry about the race akern, but don't worry about it. Everybody has a bad day now and then...just dust yourself off and try again!
Now here's a little lice check for ya.

Don't sweat it! It takes some less than great races to help us really appreciate our good ones! Don't worry, you will house the shuffling granny next time. (you can always drop some Regis pictures on the ground, that'll distract her for sure!)
