I'm retiring a few pairs of running shoes to just regular shoes. Can I just throw them in the washing machine and then pull them out later and let them air dry? Will they survive? They're still in pretty good shape, just dirty.

If you're not using them for performance, yes, you can wash them. Over time they'll break down and they get much less "springy", but it's not like you'll really care if they're just knockaround shoes now. If they're really dirty, pull the laces out and wash them along side, not in, the shoes and pull the tongue up.
Just do NOT put them in the dryer or the glue will melt.

Or give 'em one last farewell run in the rain.

wash then air dry. Put in some newspaper inside the shoes to help them dry faster inside...

Might want to take out the insoles before you wash them. They probably aren't dirty and I'm sure it will help preserve them. At least take them out when they're air drying.

Kitchen sink with an old toothbrush and some dishwasher detergent...does the trick everytime.
The one time I had a pair go through the washing machine the heel counter cracked and they were worthless then.

If you run in the rain often or just like to wash your shoes, I would highly recommend a shoe dryer.

I thought this was a thread about shoes made specifically for doing the wash, you know like "Laundry Shoes." wow, we're really getting activity-specific with the footwear
