Washer/dryer questions.

Our dryer is 10 years old, and very inefficient, so we're going to replace it soon. When we bought the last set, we had no children, and the smaller capacity is really killing us now.

My wife has explained that we naturally can't replace the dryer without replacing the washer. Confused

Anyone purchase a washer and/or dryer recently?

Any brands you've had problems with in the past?

I've been to epinions.com, which has made me leery of some of the Maytag brands, but otherwise, I'm in the wilderness.

I got the G.E. Profile "Harmony" set not too long ago.

I am in love. When I pass the set I am strongly tempted to wink.

I learned more than I want to know about washers and dryers recently. We bought a Neptune front load washer.

Cool thing is, it senses if you've put two shirts or twenty and adjusts the water accordingly. No water wasting.

It is super quiet and worth every penny.

I would go to a dealer (not the big box) but a local maytag store and ask them to explain the differences in their products. The mid level ones aren't necessarily any better than their bottom line and their Neptunes are the best of all. They now also have top-loading Neptunes.

*FWIW, we had bought a dryer at Costco not too long ago and we asked the salesman if we should replace it with a Neptune dryer. He said that if it's working fine, don't replace it--because the technology hasn't improved that much. It's in the washing machines where the technology has really improved.

Those front loading ones are awesome, but pricey on the set I think. If I spend that kind of money I wanna drive it around.

I have a Maytag Atlantis washer and a Maytag Performa dryer. I like them both, and they weren't too expensive.

I will never buy another Frigidaire product as long as I live based on a new electric dryer bought years ago. It was a POS from day 91 (90 day warranty and heating element died on day 91 exactly) and after playing mechanic on it for 4 years I gave up and bought a Sears Kenmore. Never had any problems with the Kenmore line (I don't know who makes them now, Amana was making them).

We've had six (Six? Ohmigosh! Must be time to move) good years with our mid-range Kenmore set. Not sure that I'd buy big ticket items from Sears these days though since they switched their credit card from an old fashioned store card to a Visa card that charges usurous interest rates (20+%).

Funny thing, is we bought a cheapie brand about 12 years ago. They moved from San Antonio to Alaska to New Jersey to California until giving up the ghost. The dryer died last year and the washer was still going, but I new it would be over soon.

The cheapies did the job and I wasn't too heartbroken when the movers dinged or scratched them.

Now, they better watch out for my Neptune or I will kick their collective a$$e$.

i think we have a kenmore set, but mismatched models, that came from the sears outlet. they work pretty well, i guess. sometimes the dryer needs to go thru a bit more of a cycle to get stuff dry if its a larger load...

I'd say a little Consumer Reports research is in order before a purchase of that magnitude. They're pretty much right on.

I nearly had to give my right leg as payment, but last year we got the Sears Kenmore HE4T stackable set. Yeah, those are the monsters that hold 14 pairs of jeans or 23 bath towels. For a family of five, I can't imagine we did so long with the 'regular' size machines. I kid you not, we remodeled a room to create a place for these guys. Worth it?....without hesitation. Easy on soap, easy on water, easy on electricity and believe you me, between me and my workout clothes (this time of year, think 2-3 layers) plus the rest of the fam, we do major laundry.
