Wow you all are really friendly, huh?
I'll be sure to read up on some of the messages and try to join in. Pretty cool there are some Texas people around.
Joel ~ thanks for the help and I'll try to keep the stalking to a minimum. I am having enough trouble trying to keep up with all the 'Jim's'.

Yeah, I did a 'double-take' when I read that and thought "man! is JC gonna be mad!!!" Actually though, he's bloody nice so he took it well (as you can see )
Is today 'speedwork' day?

So, we've got 4 Texans now? They're catching up to the WI Mafia and PA Posse! I think they need a nickname. How's about the buckaroos?
Welcome, Rachel!

I tried to post before lunch and it asked for me to log in and then erased my post. So I'm trying again.
Hey Joel,
JC is very nice. I emailed him to please look at my question and give me some advise. And only you and him answered me ~ and since I asked JC to look I really apprecaited you answering. Today is speedwork and I am going to the gym after work. So I'm going to try it on a treadmill. I babysit my neighbors kids on Wednesday mornings so I couldn't go run this morning. I'm excited about bringing down my time just a bit then I'll concentrate on more miles. I'd really like my average pace to be under 10/min.
I'm very glad to hear of people from Texas. I also like the Buckaroos ~ sounds very Texan. I'll have to remember who is from here so I can keep up. And I need to poke around and get to know your 'regulars' ~ Thanks to everyone who said Hello and welcomed me. Ya'll are great!

Rachel, just a point of reference, I like doing some of my speedwork on the treadmill also, you can't cheat and slow down that way or you'll fall off so it really forces you to run faster. I think it works well. Good luck with it and let us know if you have other questions!!
Personally, and this is just my opinion, I'd go for the miles first depending on what you want to do next. That's what a lot of people told me when I was first starting out--put in the miles and work on your speed after you have a comfortable base. It's a big struggle, feeling slow, but again, it all depends on what distance you want to settle into. What are your running goals other than bringing your pace down?

Hey Genie,
I better explain it before I have everyone wondering. I orginally asked about a 5K I have on 5/31. I had one last weekend and came in at 28.2 which was good for me My question was I know how important it is to add miles and get a good base down but I really wanted to be under 28 minutes for this next race. (I started back up running in February) So should I add miles or do speedwork? I had been following Hal Higdon's plan pretty close so I had been doing some speedwork anyway. But I thought it wasn't good to do both ~ add mileage and do speedwork. I had listed out what I ran at the time. About 15 miles a week with a long run of 5 miles.
So...Joel tweaked the miles around a bit. It is the about the same miles per week but spread out differently. So I really am running a bit farther on some days, still have a speed day but my total mileage didn't jump a bunch.
I just wanted something to get past the race and then I'd settle in concentrate on adding miles and wait until the summer for a half marathon program I joined to start.
Thanks for asking!
Rachel

Rachel - Add miles unless you're already running >30 MPW.

That IS good!! You should be proud of yourself.
Glad to see Shelfie was of help. That little bugger is pretty fast himself!
I think the breaking up of distances thing is good, I got into a real rut way back when running the same all week and then only adjusting up for the long runs on the weekend. Made for a very long, ugly half marathon that I was totally undertrained for!! Sounds like you're on your way to yours.
When is the half you are going to do?

Welcome aboard Rachel .
Not only do you get to join the Texan team, now there are two of us I think that qualifies us for a Rache/Rachel/Rachael team as well .

Darn I wrote a post and lost it again when it asked me to log in. This time I checked log in automatically so will that help?
Genie, My half is in January it is the EP 13.1 miler, part of the Houston Marathon. Lots of people I guess I get the 'big race' experience for my first half. I think there are a couple smaller races before the half that are scheduled in to help I guess with race day. I'm looking forward to having a group run on Sat's again. I run by myself now and it was nice to have people every now and then beside you.
PH, So you say no speedwork since I am running 15 miles? You know I actually enjoy running 400's ~ I think I will miss them when I quit.
Sandy, I smile when I see your name 'caus I think of Spongebob which I actually watch every now and then. My son is 10 yrs old so he right on the verge with Spongbob. He likes it because of the ocean though.
Soigneur, is your name Rachel and your from Texas? Do you spell it differently? I could never come up with some cute name so I always used my first name.

a couple things on a couple points, Rachel...
1) Now that you're logged in, you won't have that problem of being asked to log in again...BUT if you ever are asked to log in again, hit the BACK button and copy what you tried to post...then log in...and paste away!
2) Just a couple 5K tips (we're focussing so much on Speed and # of miles that perhaps the answer is in the actual race strategy?)
I made dramatic improvements last year by doing a couple things:
A) speedwork (thanks runner X!)
B) making sure that my first mile is the slowest one! (I disobeyed this rule last Saturday and paid the price.
people! Feel free to add any more 5K race tips!
and 3) JC isn't as nice as you'd think. He's known to trip the occasional runner
