Posted: 11/18/08 - 20:46 Post subject: Volunteer Fire Department - 2 Part Question!
Hi Guys,
Im a student in university and I would consider myself fairly active. Im quite outdoorsy and used to workout a lot but the stress of this business degree keeps me in the library. I joined the volunteer fire department since I have always been huge into that kind of stuff and I am in a small town, Wolfville, Nova Scotia. We respond to approximately 200 calls a year and they come in at all hours. I live 3 blocks away from the station. Acadia is such a small campus that I am never more than 5-6 blocks away. I run on the concrete pavement and then I jump through the RCMP's dirt garden (he he) and get to the station to get my gear on. It normally takes me 2-3 minutes to get to the station since my adrenaline is in full force due to my pager going off as well as the air raid siren going off. First few times I got there I was absolutely exhausted and a bit disoriented. Now I am a bit better but it takes away my breath. I find I get a solid sprint out and then slow down a bit by the end when I start to feel it and get tired. Second thing is about my shoes but I hit that further in the post
My 2 questions are as followed:
1: What can I do to increase my ability and endurance on these 2-3 minute sprints. I have never really run before and am a total newb at this. I want to be able to get there faster and less exhausted. I don't really have much time to do this stuff either which sucks! But I have about 3-4 years left at school as well as with the department so I really want to get working on this.
2: The biggest concern! MY SHOES! At night when I get a call I have a pair of nike running shoes I slip on and book it down to the station so that's no problem. During the day I wear converses (low cut) or fred perry canvas sneakers which have little to no arch or ankle support. Lately after a run to the station I get really sore arches on my feet, mainly my left. I wont wear running shoes all the time since it's not practical so what can I do to these shoes to make them better to run in. Some type of insole? I want them to go from aweful running shoe to somewhat ok running shoe haha.
Thanks guys!
