FCC May Force Internet Phone Companies To Cut Off Thousands
Customers Must Acknowledge 911 Problems

POSTED: 10:49 am EDT August 25, 2005
UPDATED: 10:58 am EDT August 25, 2005

NEW YORK -- Providers of Internet-based phone services may be forced next week to cut off tens of thousands of customers who have not formally acknowledged that they understand the problems they could have dialing 911 in an emergency.

The Federal Communications Commission had set a Monday deadline for providers of Internet to comply with an order requiring full emergency 911 capabilities by late November.

Vonage, the biggest voice over internet carrier with more than 800,000 subscribers, tells the The Associated Press that 96 percent of its customers have responded to the company's notices about 911 risks.

But that still means 30,000 or so would need to be shut off as soon as Tuesday.

I have had Vonage for over a year, the first thing I did was set up the 911 function. It was very clearly spelled out. I can't understand how anyone who is savvy enough to use VOIP wouldn't be able to enroll in the 911 service. Confused

I just started using Comcast's VOIP, and I keep having trouble with it.

A tech is supposed to be out today to look into the signal issues.
