Posted: 07/13/04 - 08:57 Post subject: Virtual GM...you are...
Mitch Kupchack...GM of the Los Angeles Lakers.
What do you do?
You put together a team of Payton and Malone in addition to Shaq and Kobe, and came up short in the NBA finals.
Phil Jackson, your accomplished coach is unhappy with the team, and on the last year of his contract. Payton has gone public with his frustrations with his ideas.
So, what do you do?
Phil doesn't want to stay...and asks for a ton of money to continue coaching the team.
Shaq wants to go, and says he doesn't want to play for an organization that plays players against each other.
Kobe is a free agent, and says he will investigate other teams. He has said this for a year, and has not wavered in this decision.
Malone only has a one year deal.
Shaq is 32 and unhappy....Kobe is 25 and is still an option.
I'm sitting here, and I really don't think he had much choice. Phil wanted out, and once Phil left, Shaq wanted out.
In the short term this will hurt the team, no doubt. Shaq will dominate in the East, and the Lakers will struggle without him.
However...Kobe is only 25...he's got a lot of years left. Jordan hadn't won any titles at this age yet. They went out and got a championship caliber coach. They are getting some good players for Shaq...maybe they won't all stay on the team, they could be traded again...for a big man somewhere maybe?
All I'm saying is, in the long term, this could turn out good for the team.
Not saying it will, just saying it could. That is, IF Kobe decides to return. If Kobe leaves....disaster alert...man the pumps! The team is going down.
