I am a newb to running, only started a few months ago, and I was wondering if there is any particular pattern or system I should be using as I build up my distances?

I tend to run sort of randomly most days, planning little more than which way to turn at the end of the driveway.

I try to do at least one planned run a week . Currently my "long slow runs" are between 4 and 5 miles. My day to day runs are 1.5 to 2.5 miles normally.

Any suggestions on determining distances or a pattern to use as I build up? My goal is to run a marathon by the end of the year. So far I have one 5k under my belt and I am looking forward to doing another in a few weeks.

Thanks
