Posted: 05/02/05 - 09:08 Post subject: Vancouver Int'l Half Marathon Race Report- Pics Posted!
I decided to do this half as a gauge for my current fitness for RVM in October so I ran it as a race. I've been building base mileage for the past 4 months with no racing...I did 2 consecutive weeks of 70-75+ mpw before this week. Haven't done much speedwork except for progression runs for the past 3 months and recently added tempo runs 3 weeks ago. Turned out to be the toughest half marathon (relatively) out of the 4 I've ran so far.The biggest challenge was the long hill at Prospect Point in Stanley Park although the first few miles were undulating and had a number of turns. The long but rather steep downhill after the long uphill was a relief but only made the last flat 5k more painful (especially for the quads). I've done plenty of my runs on hilly/undulating terrain (Vancouver's never completely flat as in most areas of the Pacific NW) so I still manage to recover somewhat and maintain a good pace till the finish. Nonetheless I did manage a 1 min PR off this course (1:26:12 chip time), even though I expected at least 2-3 minutes off
my previous personal best (1:27:15). I was initially disappointed but I figured that it was quite a good time for such a tough course and I'll probably do better on a flatter and faster course. Weather was perfect for racing this morning: around 50-55 degrees and partly sunny though it got warm later in the day (not too perfect for the
marathoners). The cheering crowds of spectators really helped alotduring the last few painful miles. Here are the splits:
1: 6:59
2: 7:01
3: 6:47
4+5: 13:13 (missed a mile marker here-6:36 avg)
6: 6:26
7: 6:21
8: 6:38 (start of hill)
9: 6:59 (uphill)
10: 6:05 (downhill)
11: 6:21
12.1: 6:58 (don't know why they moved the last 0.1 split to here?-
6:20/mile)
13.1: 6:22
Chip time: 1:26:12 (6:34 avg pace)
Placing: 55/6590 overall, 51/2413 in male division, 5/107 in M2024 AG
Now, I have one more month of base building and then training begins for my first marathon in June.
Thanks for reading!

been there done that course......it is one of the harder halfs I've done (minus my first one in hot, hilly, high altitude in MX). I'd estimate a 1.5-2 minute extra (at least) for that hill!!!!!!!
looks like you are definite on pace for your marathon!!!!!
