Spent the past week in a small cabin on beautiful Beaver Lake in Ontario, Canada with my youngest son and my best friend and his two boys. We had an incredibly good time. It helps that the majority of the other cabins at this camp were occupied by relatives of either mine or my buddies. My sister, bro in law and nephew occupied one cabin, my friend had two of his four brothers and their families also up there (we all grew up together). In addition, the cabin next to us was occupied by a couple from Wisconsin who we've gotten to know quite well and a family from Ontario that thoroughly love spending their vacation with their American friends.
The fishing was excellent and yours truly took home the yearly walleye fishing tournament prize of $55. The five of us in my cabin lived like slobs, ate like kings and kept the rest of the camp humored throughout the week. Except, possibly, for my buddies sister in law. She walked into our cabin to retrieve something for her nephew, walked back out and said to my sister and the Canadian lady "Dear God, don't ever let me walk into that cabin again". We obviously didn't meet her cleanliness standards. Hmmmph!
Critter siightings included the usual array of muskrats, beavers, bullfrogs, loons and ospreys. A bonus otter sighting occurred right in front of the cabin and he humored me for about 15 minutes before swimming off. And of course, the local raccoon came in nightly to dine on garbage. We finally quit putting the lid on our can so he'd enjoy his dinner w/o waking anyone up. The Wisconsin lady nearly hit a bear with her car right up the road but fortunately the bear didn't make any midnight raids.
I managed to take three 5 mile runs while up there and was escorted each time by a lovely horde of deer flies. Very scenic run out onto a long peninsula between the two adjoing lakes but those flies were nearly enough to make a person insane.
An excellent time was had by all and I can't wait to do it again next year!
