Posted: 08/16/04 - 19:18 Post subject: VO2 Max Test Results
Just got back from the test...it was on a bike, to my disadvantage since I haven't been biking in a while. Anyways I'm the "guinea pig" (together with other males 18-34) in a research project which investigates the effects of altitude on cardiovascular/heart function and oxygen uptake during exercise. They started me off with a baseline test today (simulated at sea level) in the lab and also took measurements of height, weight, and body fat %.
(for those who don't know, VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen consumed by the muscles during exercise)
Anyways here are the results:
Height: 1.74 m
Weight: 60.9 kg
% Body fat: 4.9% (I was shocked when I saw that...)
VO2 Max: 52.6 mg/kg/min
Other things they measured included blood lactate levels (they drew blood from me every 1-2 mins during the bike session) and blood hematocrit (red blood cell concentration). The next VO2 max session will be in September where I will do the same test at simulated 10,000 feet above sea level conditions. Interesting stuff....a great way to know how the body works during exercise...
I assume bike and run tests produce slightly different VO2 max results, with running somewhat higher? or are they the same?

That sounds cool! Do they tell you how to train or do you just do your normal routines?

4.9% yikes.......that is scarey........what method did they use?
10,000 feet. I can't wait to see the difference in results. Make sure you post them. That is going to be a killer of a test. How do simulate the altitude???
Who's doing the study? My DH gets tested (I'm the lovely assistant) about every six weeks and some lab in Ontario analyzes it.

FB: 24 hours before the test, I am required not to do any hard training plus no alcohol or cigarettes (I don't smoke anyway)
Sue: They measured my body fat electronically (to save time). After measuring my height, they put me on this electronic weighing machine that also estimates body fat based on height and weight. I guess all that distance running and LSDs during base combined with weight training was pretty effective.
I will post the results once I have them. I forgot to mention that in addition to the cycling test I will also have to do leg extension tests (baseline is next Tuesday). To simulate altitude, the investigators will have me breathe a different (lower) concentration of oxygen as found at 10,000 feet (hypoxic gas mix) through a gas mask. If you want I can email you the details-they sent me a 4 page MS Word document summarizing their project. The project is conducted by researchers from UBC (the university that I attend) in the Department of Human Kinetics. It's lucky that I'm currently working at school (though in a different lab and department) so getting there is convenient,
Does your husband do the running or cycling test? Do you just get a blood/lactate sample off him and then send it to the lab?
