[rant]
So the dental office calls.
Me: hello?
twit: is this <name of patient>?
Me: No, this is her mother. How can I help you?
twit: Oh, MY BAD! I didn't look at the age of the patient.
...
rest of conversation is normal, confirming her appt tomorrow.
Question is a 2-parter I guess. Why doesn't she know the patient is a minor? Maybe this is inconsequential, but this is a place where children frequent, so it seems like you should have the appropriate information handy when making a confirmation call.
Second, "My Bad" ??? Do people really talk like this to Consumer/Customers? I didn't say anything, partly because Libby is going to have a filling tomorrow and I didn't want this twit to say something to the dentist and then have him be all sh*tty at her appt (obviously, professionalism doesn't run rampant in the office, you never know)... It just floored me, I guess.
Maybe a receptionist isn't Uber-Professional... but honestly.

I'm not so bothered by the "my bad" as i am with the receptionist not knowing who she is calling.

My pet peeve is when you call anywhere for info--whether it be something simple like the weather or something important like directions to a hospital and YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE PERSON ON THE PHONE!!!!!!
If you are a boss, please listen to your employees--if they are difficult to understand--due to slang, or accents, or WHATEVER, please put them on some duty other than phone duty!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made a complaint to my therapist last week about the receptionists at the counseling center. Mental Health facilities are to work very hard at keeping your information confidential. My privacy wasn't compromised, but I felt bad for one young man because the receptionists questioned him at length. He didn't know the name of the person he was to see, but the whole waiting area knew his name and why he was there. Even as he was sitting there waiting you could hear these women discussing the name of the patient, the purpose of his visit (drug and alcohol problems) and the name of counselor he was to meet. I was furious and I informed my counselor that if that had been my first time there, I would have left, never to return.

This happened to me at the hospital a couple of weeks back. I had to have some blood tests and the lady behind the counter asked about them--loudly and at length--then she called the doc to confirm that I wasn't lying to her. Everyone around me heard my business
I left in tears.

Damn. I think a complaint to management is in order (and maybe a letter on planetfeedback.com, if they have the hospital listed)

It won't do any good--it's a military hospital.

I'm sending a big hug your way.
Maybe it's all the chocolate I've had today, but I just don't see a huge problem here. She's probably calling several people today and slipped up. Her phone manners could improve, but saying "my bad" wouldn't offend me in the least. Then again, I spend all day with ill mannered kids...

That's the point. She spends a lot of time on the phone, you'd think she'd have it together. Slang? No place in the business world when you are dealing with the paying public. JMO.

I don't think I would be offended. Everyone has an "off" day, maybe it was just hers.
Aire I'm sorry about the experience you had. That is inexcuseable.

I am familiar with military medicine & dentistry... too bad there is nothing you can do, but you are right. They just don't seem to care too much. You want we should go and get riffraff on her arse?

PEOPLE, LISTEN UP: if someone is discussing your medical bidnez in front of others, that is illegal. Just mention something like, "Wow, you guys must have a lot of insurance, because you're violating at least sixteen HIPAA laws" and they'll shut up pretty quickly. Trust me. The penalties are fierce, and both criminally and civilly applicable.
