13 Injured As Driver Plows Into Bicyclists

ST. PETERSBURG - To George ``Kip'' Vosburgh, ``It was almost like Moses at the Red Sea.''
``It was parting, and I was looking right at the grille of this car,'' said the 56-year-old member of the St. Pete Mad Dogs, one of two Pinellas bike clubs shattered Sunday when a 1994 Lincoln Continental plowed through their midst.

The car was driven by Joseph Pastore, 60, of Pinellas Park.

The dozens of bicyclists were less than 15 minutes into their weekly ride when authorities say the Lincoln barrelled across the center line of the 5300 block of 30 Avenue North at 8:42 a.m.

More than a dozen riders were injured in the crash. [...snip...]

I was riding on Saturday morning and looked up to see some dumb ash passing someone and headed straight for me. Good thing I ride along and don't take up much road. Shocked

Was the guy drunk? A few (I think there was more than one) bikers were killed DURING a race in the Milw. area last year when an ambulance, of all things, pulled out onto the course.

A guy that goes to my church was in this group. And yep, he was in church yesterday morning.

No Randy, the driver wasn't drunk. They are investigating if he has some disabilities/medical conditions though. His neighbor said that she saw him passed out in his car in his driveway on Friday. Shocked

Thankfully, none of these riders were killed, but a few were injured seriously.

These guys ride two/three abreast all over the beach roads early every Sunday morning. Never have heard of any trouble until this incident.

If this guy had an incident before when he was passed out in his car, he should have been at the doc's getting checked out, not back behind the wheel again.

But who ever said we humans are smart enough, in most cases, to do the correct thing. Sad this happens, especially if there were warning signs and it wasn't just a freak accident, it could have been prevented. Sad

Just a little update on this story:

Driver in crash blames water in eyes
This article wrote:
Pastore said he did not feel guilty because he did not think he was at fault.
"I'm not saying anything about remorse or guilt. I don't feel any remorse or guilt," he said. "I'm at peace with myself. . . . I know this was an accident."

Excuse me?

In the past five years, Tampa has ranked second, and St. Petersburg third, for the highest number of cyclist fatalities and injuries per capita. Fort Lauderdale ranks No. 1.

No more riding for me. Shocked

I think you're right. Most of the cyclists are folks that use bikes as their main means of transportation. Been there, when my car blew up 2 months after I moved here.

It always amazes me though, how many people I see riding their bikes against the traffic.
