would you cut into your planned two-week vacation (asked for 7 months ago) and go back into work?

Would you ever return to work under any circumstances?

Dear boss:

Remember what one wise old First Sergeant said to me once:

"Leiutenant; you will become indispesable to this organization the day you put your finger in a cup of coffee and leave a dent."

The way they make coffee around here, that wouldn't be too difficult...

Voluntarily? No.

But I have had to do that in certain cases. How our Dept mgmt operates (and maybe even our state gov't in general) cause a lot of job specialization. There isn't anyone in my agency that can do my job without months of transitioning. If something comes up, they go to the expert. For the financial systems, that's me. And it often happens when I'm on vacation or on a day off.

They'd have to be able to get a hold of me first. I do have a cell phone, but nobody at work knows the number. I'd screen my calls at home (if I was at home), so it was work calling I wouldn't pick up.

If I asked off and it was approved and they told me I couldn't go, I'd quit. No hesitation. Would I go back in early? Oh hell no.
