In summary I wasn't too happy with my result but the post-race BBQ was great and it sort of made up for the disappointment. Plus point, I had plenty of people to run with, so it was sort of fun surging with people throughout the race...Weather was deceptively cool but it was humid. The course overall started off with a fast downhill but had some ups and downs in the mid sections and finished off with a downhill to flat finish.
I stuck with a bunch of 4 to 5 guys after the 1st km (which was really fast) including a couple of fast old geezers-one in his 50s and one in his late 60s- the latter guy (Herb Philips) is one of the world record holders in his age group! He still currently runs 2:50 marathons and 37 min 10ks and he did a 2:40-something marathon some years ago. The rest were in the 20s or 30s. Herb surged ahead and the rest of us went after him. While doing so, there was a tough battle between me and 2 guys...one guy would take the lead for a bit and then another would surge ahead and so on...After 3k, I broke away from the pack and managed to catch up to Herb by the 4k mark and stay ahead of him for a bit. I thought I had him, but Herb came back with a vengeance near the finish and managed to take me out by 4 seconds. Meanwhile just yards away from the finish, the 2nd old geezer (50+ years) sprinted ahead and edged me out at the finish line by 1/2 a second Mad
Splits:
1k: 3:22 (fast downhill here)
2k: 3:50 (too slow!!)
3k: 3:44
4k: 3:43
5k: 3:41
Time: 18:22 (18:23 gun)
Overall- 46/291
AG: 5th in M2024
Overall time was alot slower than expected...from recent workouts, I anticipated something better. I could list a number of possible reasons/excuses why it didn't turn out well....with the most probable explanation being that I wasn't rested enough- it was more of a training run rather than an important race.
I'll see how the 10k goes in 2 weeks.

Dang that Herb!

Lot of competition in that race for being that size. 18:22 doesn't even get a top 15%? Ouch.

This race was part of a series of races that many people (with BC athletics Membership) run to score points...
There were 2 guys below 15 mins, 9 guys in the 15-16 min range and many more in the 16s. Lots of fast ladies...The 1st woman finished in 16:58.

18:22 is still a nice time Tim. You've got plenty of time for improvement.
